Starting Underground Newspaper

Our School paper is lame so I'm planning to start an underground newspaper at school, we already have set up editors, artists, and columnists. We already have a couple of businesses sponsoring us. One thing we haven't found is a publisher, we don't have enough funds despite the sponsors, so should we just use our printers to crank this out?

Thanks for the future advice :)

Buy a bunch of shovels.

Start digging in an undisclosed location.

Bring in printing press.

Make sure that there is a way for the gas from your press to get out.

Distribute

You don’t want to print it on your own printer. That’s just going to come out looking even lamer than your school paper. Not to mention the price. Ink is rather expensive.

I can PM you the link to the printer we use if you want. They’re considerably cheaper than other companies and they do a good job.

I will say, that I don’t think that you’ll find great success. Already, you’ve run into the problem of finances. I know our paper receives thousands from the school district every year, that’s funding you won’t have and will have to make up through advertising and subscriptions.

Another thing to consider is distribution. How many readers are you looking at having? Do you have places around the school where you can place copies? Will people pick them up?

What kind of news do you intend to cover? Will you cover school issues and compete directly with the school newspaper? If you plan to do this, you might have trouble getting the same respect that someone affiliated with the school paper will have.

How do you plan to design the layouts? Will you need software? How much will that cost? Can someone buy that for you? We use Adobe Suite, and I don’t know exactly how much that costs, but I know it’s expensive.

I really hope you’ll prove me wrong. It sounds like you’ve got a lot figured out so far, but here are some major issues you should be thinking about before you go through with this.

It doesn’t have to be underground you know… freedom of the press.

I think you can do it as long as you don’t distribute it on school grounds.

If you really want to get the newspaper to work, you have to throw a coup de’tat of your own school newspaper to eliminate competition and ensure high quality articles/photos.

What are the changes you want to make that are so radical they can’t be changed with the school newspaper?

Your paper could be online only - save trees, tie in more multimedia type things. My school’s paper is internet only, and it’s pretty well read.

The articles that run our school newspaper are very bland and boring, you see the paper in the trash the day it is distributed because kids simply don’t read it. We want our newspaper to report about real stuff going on in school like how the budget cuts have affected us, problems with parking etc. articles students can relate to. A kid from our rival school has done this before with great success, and beverly hills high (beverlyunderground.org) has a similar paper.

And please PM me the type of printer you use :)

Thanks

does the school not allow you to print things about budget cuts and other problems? I’m just thinking that the process might be made simpler if you found a way to do this by modifying the existing newspaper directly, but you know it better than I do.
