<p>It would make the discussion more useful if everyone (including the OP) noted the distinction between “dropping out” versus “taking a leave of absence” or “doing co-op employment”.</p>
<p>“Dropping out” implies no intent or ability to return to school to complete the degree; the other two keep the option open (often with the intent to return to school to complete the degree). Indeed, given the low success rate of startups, taking a leave of absence and treating the startup as a co-op job makes more sense – in the common case where the startup fails, you just return to school and complete your degree, with good work experience as a bonus. The rare case is a startup that becomes wildly successful.</p>
<p>So, don’t drop out. Take a proper leave of absence or set it up with your school as if you were going on co-op employment.</p>
