My daughter registers for fall semester in a few days and is considering STAT 100. It’s a 3 credit course, but it is listed in Testudo as having three 50-minute lectures each week as well as three 50-minute discussions each week. If that’s correct, that’s five hours of class time each week. Is this correct? That’s double the class time of most 3 credit courses.
I agree that it doesn’t look correct - may be a typo? She’s going to have to ask about that.
Hey! Math Major here.
It is correct. One of the things about early math classes at the University of Maryland is that you will spend more class time per week than the “credit hours.” Labs at other colleges and UMD work the exact same way. They are just large swaths of time portioned out for some introductory courses that have fewer credits so that students can take the courses they need in the time they have. Let me know if you have other questions.
Thank you - this was confirmed with her adviser as well. I think she will go with 4 classes since she will have both STAT and a science lab class both with extra hours as you note.
