Yes, I know grades are curved and so no one knows exactly what an 'A' is for this class, but I would just like a rough estimate of what you believe would be a safe A so I know where I stand currently, and whether I need to improve.
So, people who've taken this class before, give me your ballpark figures GO

2 +/- 0.5 SDs above the average…

I say this with 95% confidence…

What about for a B? I’m really struggling in this class and I would be more than happy with a B.

lol @ starrynights

1SD above average = top 16% = solid A

My stats 21 prof last sem said that the stats dept has a policy of giving about 25% As (A+,A, A-) for this class. Grade distribution for Prof Ibser based on official university data (according to CourseRank) gives 23% of some kind of A, and 33% of some kind of B.

Grades are typically heavily left/negatively-skewed (i.e. longer left tail), so 1 sd away from the mean usually isn’t good enough to put you in the top 16%. Based on the grade distribution given by CourseRank for Prof Ibser, being exactly in the top 16th percentile puts you between an A and an A- so I wouldn’t exactly consider that a solid A.

I had Prof Purves for stat 21 last fall.

1st midterm: ~0.5 SD above avg
2nd midterm: Avg
Final: ~1 SD above avg??

I got an A-.

Just going off what Copper said …

I took Stats N21 (the online version) and the amount of A’s were higher than 25%. (I think it was around 30%). However, it could just be that this isn’t the same as the regular Stat 21. I’m not sure.
