Has anyone heard back from the State Department regarding summer 2010 internships? I know the timeline on the USAjobs.gov website says notifications of acceptance won't be sent out until December, but I've heard of one person who's already been offered a position overseas. Any information would be greatly appreciated -- thanks!

Notification varies by post/department. I received notification last year around the 10th of December.

I got an email from them today saying I would hear something by mid-January. My adviser guessed that they probably got more applications than expected this year so it was possible they wouldn’t make all their announcements until then. Did anyone else receive this email?

blondie08;

I received that email today as well. Let’s just see whats gonna happen!

Yep, according to the facebook group they sent it to everyone. Apparently some people have started hearing from bureaus…

lobgent - where was the overseas appointment?

I know, I am waiting to hear too. Hope it is soon. What is the link to the facebook group?

Thanks

Received an offer from an overseas post.

Congrats, Hecatonchires!

Perhaps mistakenly judging from a small sample, it looks like the overseas offers are rolling in first. The one I heard about was in North Africa. What about you, Hecatonchires?

EAP (East Asian and Pacific Affairs)

I heard from EAP as well, for an alternate position…

Does anyone know anything about those? Is it a wait list that isn’t really used, or is there a solid possibility I’ll end up doing something?

You may or may not get a position. It just depends on the circumstances of the bureau/post.

You will be allowed and encouraged to go through the security clearance process. Even if you get a security clearance but do not receive an offer, the clearance helps a future application for State or other government agencies.

Hi Hecatonchires,

Congrats! Do you mind telling me which embassy/mission you’re at? I applied for Beijing… but it looks like I didn’t get it.

This will be your second year interning, right?

Also, does anybody know how it works with paid internships? I, for example, applied for a paid internship - does this mean I’m competing for a limited number of paid internships, or that if I do get an internship they’ll just decide whether or not to pay me.

Basically, did I lower my chances by applying for a paid internship?

Weiguo,

The email came to me less than 24 hours ago, so it is completely possible they are still notifying people. I think it normally takes a little while for them to get in touch with everyone. I also applied for Beijing (which was probably pretty popular) but my alternate slot that I was offered is for Shanghai, so maybe different places notify at different times.

As to the paid internship stuff, I have no idea. I applied for unpaid.

Are there still a lot of people who are waiting to hear? I wish we could just find out. I am so nervous!

I received an email saying I should I be hearing from the bureau soon (Washington DC). Keeping my fingers crossed.

i got a call today from my 2nd choice bureau, still hoping that i’m gonna hear from my first choice. i would imagine each bureau would notify you about your selection at different times, so I think you should give it a few more weeks if you haven’t heard anything.

Is it safe to say that if I haven’t heard anything yet, I didn’t get it?

Or, do you think there are still many decisions not out yet?

Thanks!
