State Dept.: UChicago Has Top Econ Dept.

University of Chicago Has Top Graduate Program in Economics | IIP Digital

Umm the article cites US News when saying Chicago has the number one econ program. That is also incorrect/misleading as Chicago is tied with Harvard, MIT, and Princeton [Best Economics Programs | Top Economics Schools | US News Best Graduate Schools](http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-humanities-schools/economics-rankings).

True but UChicago has more Nobel prizes in economics than any other school in the world (this list includes anyone who was a student or professor or researcher at the school–for all schools–not just UChicago):

1) UChicago - 26
2) MIT - 20
3) Harvard - 18
4) Berkeley - 17
5) Stanford - 16
6) Columbia - 14
7) Yale - 13
8) Princeton - 12
9) London School of Economics - 11
10) Cambridge / Oxford / Carnegie Mellon - 9

(These figures haven’t been completely updated for 2012 yet; but UChicago and MIT retain their lead.)

Sure although MIT does better in John Bates Clark medals, which despite being less prestigious may be a better indicator because of less lag time. Harvard does better in publications. That isn’t to say that Chicago’s econ department isn’t good but it’s not an undisputed hegemon. Most undergrads pursuing econ probably care less about research than placement on Wall Street as well. Somewhat surprisingly, Chicago doesn’t do very well in number of undergraduates who eventually get econ phds http://www.vanderbilt.edu/econ/wparchive/workpaper/vu06-w11.pdf</a> [caveat the data is old].
