Self explanatory title. Does anyone know of any state flagships that offer good merit aid (25%+ off tuition) for OOS applicant? Guaranteed or competitive is fine.

Take a look on the merit aid threads in the Financial Aid Forum. U of Alabama has guaranteed merit aid.

Texas A&M, while not the flagship, would likely be flagship level in a lot of states. A number of its scholarships (even those which are not necessarily that big) come with out of state tuition waivers.

Berkeley has the Drake scholarship (full ride), but it is extremely competitive and for mechanical engineering majors only.

Ohio state offers 12000 a yr renewable for kids with a 28+ act and top 40% class rank. I think its called the National Buckeye Scholarship

Why don’t you tell us more…

What is your GPA and your Math + CR score for one best sitting?

What is your major?

How much will your parents spend each year? (so we know how much merit you need. 25% off OOS tuition doesn’t tell us much since some schools have much higher OOS costs than others.)

While it’s fine to apply to a couple of schools with competitive merit, you really should apply to a couple of schools with ASSURED merit for your stats. That way, you will know for SURE that you have some merit awards (some safety schools).

Alabama is probably the highest ranked school that gives the largest assured merit scholarships.

Texas A&M is indeed a flagship university. More specifically, it’s the flagship university of the Texas A&M system. Because Texas A&M receives the lion’s share of the system’s endowment, it has a surprisingly large endowment (about $3.5 billion). No doubt you meant it’s not usually considered the best public university in the state, which is not quite the same.

UGA is pretty generous with merit scholarships. OOS students with good GPAs and test scores can usually get at least an OOS tuition waiver (i.e. you pay in-state tuition). Athens is up there with Chapel Hill as one of the best college towns in the South.

Several posters have gotten extremely good merit aid at UF as well ($20K scholarships).

Michigan State, although it’s arguably not a flagship.
