state funding, research and campus job opportunities

Hey everyone

I am going to be a senior next yr, so ill be applying to UC berkeley for bioengineering

How is bioengineering there? are there lots fo research opportunities?

Also, are there campus jobs available?

Also, almost EVERYONE is telling me that all the UC's are affected since they're not receiving much funding from the state. What exactly has changed? and what opportunities no longer exist?

and last thing, id just like to know a estimate of my chance for berkeley

gpa: 3.67 (HUGE upward trend) (5 APs junior yr (all A's) and 4 APs senior yr)

nj resident

weighted gpa: 4.41

SAT math: 790
SAT Reading: 720
SAT Writing: 700

ACT: 34

SAT Math: 800
SAT Physics: 800
SAT Chemistry: 800
SAT History: 710

and some pretty decent EC's (state medal in mathematics, state award in physics, bioresearch clones published, internship at university)

uhh basically, alot of activities have been cut/affected

and u dont really have a good chance for berkeley at all

Research opportunities haven’t really been cut as far as I can tell, provided that you are willing to work for free (which most students are). None of my friends (or me) had trouble finding research during freshman year. It’s not like too many labs are being shut down because of the budget cuts…

Get over yourself frenchcoaster, the OP has a great chance at Berkeley. Do you have any idea what type of idiots get into UCLA and Berkeley? The OP is clearly more determined and qualified than those morons I have seen receive acceptance letters to both Berkeley and UCLA…

I agree, the OP has a great chance to get into Berkeley. Don’t even listen to frenchcoaster, he seems to be a pessimist at heart. Your test scores are amazing to me. Practically aced every single one.

thanks guys

yeah ive seen frenchcoaster around here a lot constantly undermining people’s opinions and questions

ok so it seems research is still available, but without pay?

If i go to berkeley i will not aid since im not a citizen or a permanent resident of the US, even thoguht ive lived in nj for almost 11 yrs now

does this mean id have to pay like 55k each yr?
what im asking is, is there any other type of aid available for me?

You can probably get paid if you’re really good, but most people (including me) are just content to be doing consistent research at all. And this is pretty much true at most schools for undergrads. You can get course credit for research as well if you want.

Berkeley is an amazing place to do research.
