State Honors Colleges

Found the Reader's Digest article:
"Penn State's Schreyer Honors College offers an Ivy League-style education minus the sticker shock. With average SAT scores as high as Dartmouth's, for example, 1800 studnts study with top professors, in mostly small classes. Schreyer has a 100% advanced-degree placement rate for students who apply upon graduation. The price? About $11,000 a year for Pennsylvania residents. Other top picks: the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College at the University of Mississippi and the Barrett Honors College at Arizona State"

Not a long list. My D received some information about the Robert E. Cook Honors College at Indiana University (Pennsylvania). Any experience with this program?

fog: thanks for locating the article. Will check out U of Miss since it's closeby.

Has anyone seen a longer list of rankings? Would love to know how the southern states "rank" with their honor colleges.

My S also received some information about the Robert E. Cook Honors College at Indiana University (Pennsylvania) in the mail today ( along with all the H-Y-P , and Williams , UChicago , Dartmouth , Brown , NYU college junk mail ) . Pricewise , this Indiana University ( and location for a one car family ) looks nice . The student-designed viewbook has a nice ring to it but still makes me skeptical . However , I noticed that it does not have a Phi Beta Kappa . Is that not like the general rule of a good college - if it's has the PBK ??

Anyone know anything about Michigan State's Honors College? Is it considered "good"? Prestigious?

thelarson: I am trying to find out some kind of ranking for all/many of the honors programs -- but no luck yet.

I do have the guidebook, "Honors Programs and Colleges" by Petersons but it doesn't rank. gives info about each.

MSU--It's good and an honor.

Prestigious. It is if you/others think so, but you don't enroll in Prestige 101 at any college...

MSU??? McNeese State University?

No Moo--was referring to Michigan State...

Honors Colleges are VERY different at each school & can vary from a full blown school to just a few courses (often for freshmen & sophomores). They also vary in how housing works to full honors dorms to floors in a dorm to fully integrated housing with all other students. What they require in terms of coursework & to graduate with honors also varies considerably between requiring writing a thesis that would be otherwise similar to a master's thesis to taking a number of courses, etc. Perks from being in the honors college varies from being able to register early, get 1st choice & guaranteed housing to not much of anything.
Haven't personally been able to find much that does a great job of comparing the different honors programs myself. As an aside, private schools also often have honors colleges.

HIMom is correct: the benefits of Honors Colleges vary widely and I dont' know of any easy way to compare them. Anecdotally from student reports, some have made all the difference in the world and some weren't all they were cracked up to be, leading to unhappy student transfers.

At a minimum, I would want to talk to students currently in the program to get their impressions. What they say may lead to further questions.

166 Sorry, the links didn't copy, will try again.

hmm ... if I were doing this for my kid I wouldn't be trying to find a ranking of the honor's programs (I'm not a big fan of rankings in general) ... but I would be creating a huge spreadsheet to collect info on them. List the schools, the attirbutes of the overall university (both academic and social) and then a million attributes of the honor's program ... register with everyone or first, requirements to stay in the program, live with all the students or in honors housing or choice, etc. This would hopefully help my child determine which fits best if at all.

3togo: We must think alike. I have been working on such a spreadsheet for about 2 months now. The problem is getting "unbiased" info about a school's honor colleges. A school's own website is going to "play up" its honors program to the point that parents/students don't know how much is "hype" and how much is real.

Any additional input on the State Honors Colleges would be appreciated

I'd love to see the spreadsheet when you are done! Can you post it for all to see???? :)

Since so many colleges have honors colleges now, it's hard to know if it has just become "the thing to do" (offer such a program because everyone else is) or if a college really takes it seriously.

sure.......

I know someone who went to Robert E. Cook and loved it. Honors students are housed in a separate dorm and get to know each other well over the four years they are at IUP. Many are quirky, but in a good way that complements the quirks of others. The students all had excellent opportunities upon graduation. This is an honors program worth investigating further.

Ellen..... Is IUP Indiana University Purdue? And is Robert Cook the honors program there? Sorry to be dumb about this. I tried to find this in my Honors college book
