State/Nationally Ranked Athlete but not Recruited Athlete?

Just curious,
If you were in top 100 for a sport in your state, say golf, and you are top 500 nationally. But you didn’t want to be recruited. How exactly would that work out? Is that considered a hook? I mean if you had other golf activities, like varsity golf 4 years, varsity golf captain 2 years. This isn’t me btw, lol I wish I was ranked in a sport.
Thanks for the answers in advanced!

It’s very difficult to come up with “answers” when you are talking in broad terms about athletics and colleges. I have seen kids “heavily” recruited for athletics everywhere except where they wanted to go for school.

It’s only a hook if you are being asked to attend as a student athlete. Otherwise it is an EC activity.

This probably applies to many athletes that apply for admission. If your friend is not a recruited athlete, but is excellent in his or her sport and has many leadership positions in that sport, then my guess is that it will be seen as a strong EC and a good “plus factor” rather than as an athletic hook. Excellence in any given area is certainly a positive for an applicant. But I would imagine that the grades and scores will need to be at the level needed for the non-hooked applicant pool of any given school.

@JustOneDad @pardullet @Jennings99 All right, thanks!! I guess its just a strong EC not a hook.
