hey, I was wondering if nyu students were eligible to get resident status in the state of NY. I have my california id/drivers liscence, so I am not sure if this is possible.

to be a resident of any state the requirements usually are that you have to have lived in a state for an entire year and show evidence that you plan on staying there full time. For example you need to show that you have a steady job or that you at least don’t spend extended periods of time working in another state. Basically if you are going to NYU but then go home every summer and work at home then no you can’t. But if you stay the summers mostly in New York and you have housing you can live at the entire year there then after a year you can apply for residency.

From what I’ve heard so far, a college dorm cannot be considered a permanent residence, so you’d need to be off campus too.

For what purpose are you attempting to get residency? Usually students ask so they can get in-state tuition to a public university. NYU is private; NY residents pay the same as out of state residents. The answers given above deal with the residency for in-state tuiton, which is not an issue here. The answers may differ depending on why you want to establish residency,
