(Only UVa refers to buildings built in the 1950s and 1960s as "new". )

"New" Cabell Hall, which was built in the early 1950s, and is a main classroom and faculty office buildng for many liberal arts, has been approved for $64.5 million of state funds for a complete renovation.

What happened to the rotunda money. We need both honestly. New Cabell is, like, the antithesis of everything that UVA should be. The first time I was in it, I couldn’t believe UVA let its classrooms get so rundown. You compare it to the new south lawn or even the new comm school and it is just completely ridiculous.

Oh okay as long as they get to do both. I wonder if it would have been cheaper to knock down New Cabell and rebuild, with all of the talk that went on about the Rotunda being so expensive to renovate.

hazelorb, originally the plan was to demolish New Cabell Hall once the South Grounds were up. However, it is much, much cheaper to renovate it, and it won’t be as disruptive to classes, faculty offices, etc. since the renovation can proceed one floor at a time. The building is structurally sound–just ugly and outdated.
