I have a really random question: does living in a dumb state (Arizona for me) hurt or help you in the application process? I'm only wondering because my SAT score is pretty low (2120).

Yeah, your SAT is only in the top tenth percentile.

Horrible.

Where are u thinking of applying? YAY some one from AZ

compared to the people on this site i feel discouraged applying to top schools, but i'm doing it nonetheless

im applying to stanford, princeton, Wash U, Rice, Berkeley, and a bunch of accelerated Med. Programs like Notherwestern's and BU's

You have to understand a few things about this site:

Some of the best and brightest post here, meaning you get a skewed view of the prospective applicants in many cases (except for Ivies). Many here have amazing SATs, GPAs and ECs. However, none of the aforementioned are the be all, end all, and nobody here (except for admissions people who post here) have much of a clue about how the colleges pick their classes. You just have to think of your score in the proper context.

Many here probably troll the site-lie about their stats. Now, I am not accusing anyone, but some people's resumes are extremely suspect.

Basically, don't let people here discourage you because some are ignorant and bitter.

Good luck.

thanks merlin, that makes me feel more confident

Good. You SAT is phenomal, and a score I would kill for (1990 right here). Don't let anyone tell you different. That said, I am happy with my score because I know it is pretty good; I accept that I don't have a 2300 and I don't give it a second thought.

Your SAT isn't the only factor as well. Your grades are probably great, and your ECs are also important. Make sure you utilize your essays and pick the teacher recs which best represent YOU-it needn't be the BEST reccomendation.

I firmly believe everyone will go where they are meant to go, and if they work hard they will be successful. Just try to be optimistic and realize there is only so much you can do.
