Some states have provisions where traditional age college students may get state resident tuition or a discount from non-resident tuition due to high school graduation within the state, even if their parents moving out of state would lose residency otherwise, although there are typically other conditions like the length of time residing or enrolled in school in the state prior to high school graduation that vary between different states.

Inclusion or exclusion of students on non-immigrant visas and/or undocumented or DACA status varies by state.

Some, like Idaho, have other favorable policies.

“Student completed 6 years of elementary and/or secondary school in Idaho, is domiciled in Idaho, and matriculates within 8 years immediately following high school graduation.”

This would’ve applied to our kids and we no longer live in Idaho.

Be careful relying on this for California. UC is very, very good at finding exceptions to make that policy inapplicable.

In-state tuition, does not necessarily mean that you will get state aid to help pay the cost.
