What do you think is the maximum number of semester units you would take and still manage a great GPA?

like 5 classes, who knows how many credits.

It depends on credit hours, not necessarily class amounts. There can be one-hour(credit) seminars, 4-hour lab/lecture sciences, or just plain 3-hour classes. I'm thinking that a usual max. amount is around 18-20 credit hours per semester, with exceptions of course. Also depends on the person about being able to handle it.

My brother took 20 credits first and second semesters, and is taking 24 this summer, and maintaining a 3.92 GPA. Of course he served on a submarine as a nuclear physics specialist for six years, and he doesnt have to work to pay for school or anything, and he lives off campus. My parents couldnt believe his grades, after he graduated HS with something like a 2.5 GPA because he attempted to get through every single class with taking just the quizzes and exams and rarely doing homework. But he developed an unbelievable work ethic during his years of service, and it's paying off for him. He'll graduate with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA in just 3 1/2 years.

Myself...ehh....haha....I wasn't so driven my first year and my grades show it. I'm still taking the same number of credits next year, but plan to focus myself better. It's all about time management and preventing procrastination.

It depends on what the classes are in - 20 hours of sociology is a lot different than 20 hours of chemistry (and I can say this as someone with their bachelor's in Sociology.)

So 18 units of undergraduate (mostly history, French, Spanish and English courses [I'm not a math person]) is fine if I'm not going to be working, have pretty much most of my days completely free and will not be socializing? :) Sounds grindish?

No socializing?

dude, with 18 you can still socialize and party

Sarcasm people. . . but it's good to be reassured. Alright, thanks everyone. I was wondering this because my college suggests you don't work at all if you are going to "take on" 18 units, which will equate to about 56 hrs./week of either being in class or studying/homework.
