I'm only a junior, but I am in a predicament.

I really want to go to an out-of-state school [i.e., Syracuse] with a pre-med or genetics program, but I can't afford it. I could take out 30k in loans, but that sounds like a bad end for me.

Or, I could go to UMaine - it's a state college and it's a pretty good school [one of the 366 best colleges] and it's only around 5k a year, but it doesn't have a genetics or pre-med program.

Plus, the locality of UMaine makes me cringe - I kind of want to get out of here.

But would it be a better idea to go to the good undergrad school out-of-state, or the cheap state school in-state?

Either way, I am planning on going to a med school afterwards.

Look for a private school. Even though the sticker price is more expensive (45-50k a year), they give better financial aid than most public schools.

all schools have a "pre-med program". you dont have to have a pre-med major to get into medical school, so if medicine is your plan, then major in anything you want, take the required classes for most med schools, get as high a gpa as you can, and do great on the MCAT.

Go to Maine over Syracuse. Save the $$$. Syracuse is not woth that price differential unless you're oinf communications there or geting a generous aid package.

You may want to apply to several different places and expand your options. As previously mentioned, many out of state private institutions have better financial aid. And while applying for scholarships (both school specific and broader) may not seem like the most desirable activity, it certainly will help. I'm not sure how difficult it could be, but I suppose you could always transfer as well (since most people are taking required core classes their first year anyway).
You do have a bit of time, since you're a junior=).
