harmon, There is another service out there that has lots of good information about everyday student life. CC won't let me post the name but it is two words with the first word College and the second word is a synonym for intruder or burglar. (Charades!) Anyway, once you figure out the name, check out their website and the many books they publish on many of the most popular schools with lots of data on the questions that you asked.

Miami of ohio. I've only seen that mentioned once or twice. Great school. Awesome campus. Nice looking ladies. Hard to ask more out of a college. It was on the original list of public ivys.

Miami of Ohio maybe a good school but it is NO WHERE near where top schools like UVa and Berkeley are at.

I agree with nextmikesays. come on, some of the schools posters are listing like miami-ohio and ohio state etc are good schools, but deffiantly not among the very elite publics. not even close.

UC Berkeley
William & Mary

U Virginia

U Michigan
U North Carolina
UC Los Angeles
U Wisconsin
U Texas don't dare believe it does not belong in top 10
U Illinois
U Indiana

Honorable Mentions:

U Washington --> kinda unfair because i hate seattle and therefor will not even bother looking if it's a top 10
UCSD --> good solid school but others are better i believe
Ohio State --> their binge drinking-700 peep classes and football team cast a shadow on it's potential and it's actual academic strength
Miami Ohio --> is it really that good ?
U Florida ---> hot babes but i dunno alot else, just hear it's pretty good

believe it or not i will just put Texas A&M in here because they are way too underrated. Some depts are crap but some of them are top tier... or so i've heard.....

btw i how would you rank those schools on their IR programs, i know w&m would probobly blow the others away but just for kicks.

comments are welcome cheers

hello Groenveld9 i think Honorable Mentions should include UC boulder,U of pittsburgh,u of minnesota.

I'll second the U of Minnesota as a honorable mention. Then again, I may be somewhat biased...

I feel that PSU and Rutgers are on the same level... does anyone disagree?

The funny thing is that academically, UCSD and UCLA are almost identical except UCLA is stronger in humanties overall, plus, it has sports basketball and football that are perennially highly ranked.

There should be two disdinct public school rankings: one as already presented and the other for the honors program or college. These lists will, or,at least, should look very different from each other.

Why not SUNY's? Are they bad to go too?
[/quote]

I'm curious about this, too, seeing as how these are my state schools. I've read pretty good things about SUNY Stony Brook and SUNY New Paltz. More discussion of East Coast schools? (NOT Rutgers, I don't know why, I just know I won't be going there).

Binghamton is the best SUNY overall, but for the sciences Stony Brook is the best whereas for engineering Buffalo is the best. New Paltz is ok, but its not really on par with those 3, nor Geneseo which is like the state LAC. Those 4 are clearly the top 4, but we just spread the money too thin to have a nationally recognized public school in the great state of NY. Bing, SB, Buffalo and Geneseo are solid though.

"Wisconsin has top Econ, Political Science, and Biological Science programs. These are all top 10 programs nationally, I believe."

Actually Wisconsin's Poli Sci is no longer a top 10 program, although i imagine it will be again soon. UCSD actually has all three areas you list in the top 10 nationally (Econ, Political Science, Biological Science Programs) and so does UC Berkeley.

haha did someone put Indiana as a top 10 public over Washington and UCSD. Where are people coming up with this stuff. Schools with over 1300 average sat's and over 4.0 gpa's are being left off and ohio state university and university of miami are included.... were not talking about football guys....these are not even reasonable lists. Clearly UC Berkeley, Michigan, UCLA, Virginia, William and Mary, UNC, UCSD, Wisconsin should all be included. Look at their student gpa's and sat's for admits. I also believe these are the top publics US News lists as well, although i dont always believe their rankings are the most accurate. But, These schools are without question the elites. The others after these schools are debatable, and strong arguments could be made for UIUC, Georgia Tech, University of Washington, and University of Texas. these schools, in my opinion should also be considered elite.

i should be hung for leaving out PSU and Pitt and Minnesota. Even Georgia Tech.
Boulder should also get an honorable mention but then again about 30 other public schools should. I was just stating the what i thought should be the top ten and i should have felt that by putting the honorable mentions in i would definetly missed some schools and it would spark some minor controvosy. But everyones list's bound to be different due to biases and just different perspectives of schools(well duh).
I think the list to end all lists (for me so not for you) would be:

Berkeley
William and Mary
UCLA
Michigan
Virginia
UCSD
Wisconsin
UNC

all others such as UT, PSU, IUC, IU, UF etc etc

and btw. i don't know alot about the SUNY system but i don't think any/most of them would make the 2nd group i just 'created' judged on what i do know about them.

and i agree with garrity about the separation between the honors school programs and the non-honors* programs that we are talking about now... i hope

i don't want to say normal, it's just politically incorrect
cheers

lmao. Screw it, just call them normal. It's like how at my school they call the regular classes "advanced." puhhleeeaze.

just trying to make everyone happy miss zanna lol

also, maybe they are not as good as the others we have been discussing... but
Syracuse University
and
Miami University
are both public.
Do these fit into the top 10 ?
