state taxes for student living/working in multiple states

entomom, did you have to buy state add-ons for TurboTax for all the states?

I know I didn’t have to pay to use the state returns, but they might have charged for e-filing, sorry I can’t remember.

This just came up, I looked earlier in the week for state information but they hadn’t posted it yet for this year. I don’t know exactly what they mean by rebate, because I used the online free TT:

[How do I get my state e-file rebate in the TurboTax Basic software? - TurboTax® Software Support](http://turbotax.intuit.com/support/iq/Purchase-with-Discount/How-do-I-get-my-state-e-file-rebate-in-the-TurboTax-Basic-software-/GEN12433.html)

They only have 3 of the 4 states I need…

It’s likely to be a while before the states are available. In some cases, they have to know exactly how the federal forms are going to work before they can figure out how the state forms will work. Then the software companies have to get their “forms” approved by the state. This is also the case for the paid preparers - very frustrating when employers finally got it together enough to get W2s out to employees early this year, and we can’t complete the tax returns yet! I don’t know about other states, but our VITA sites were told they won’t be able to enter any state data for Connecticut until after January 30. Incidentally, our VITA preparers can do multiple states, but different sites may have policies stating they won’t - depends on the skill of the preparers, and how busy they are too.

Yes,

^This question was concerning the online free-filing TT for people that qualify, which includes many students who are below the minimal earnings threshold. I know that last year the state programs I used were free, but I can’t remember if the actual e-filing was free or if there was a fee, in which case you could always hardcopy file.

CTS, the link I gave says those 23 states are available for the 2012 tax year.

If you talking about Turbotax Freedom, last year non-free state cost only $14.95.

See the description for last year [TurboTax Freedom: Free Federal and State e-file (22 states) if qualified - Slickdeals.net](http://slickdeals.net/f/3835962-TurboTax-Freedom-Free-Federal-and-State-e-file-22-states-if-qualified)

^Thanks :)!

Looks like the stated added this year was DC, which is one I need, yippeee.

I recommend using the free TurboTax site. As I noted in a previous post, not all of the states listed allow nonresidents to e-file no matter how much one pays, my experience being with AL.

I would think that most states have paper income tax forms available online and some public buildings. Since students have relatively uncomplicated income tax returns with few deductions, it wouldn’t take much time to fill out the forms and mail them in. The free TurboTax seems to have the tax forms for every state, but doesn’t allow free e-filing for every state. with federal and every state return, there is an option to print out the forms and mail them in for the cost of a stamp and an envelope. :)

I know for a fact that the free TurboTax software allows one to choose more than 2 states for tax returns.

Many people don’t know this, but if you don’t qualify for the free federal e-file, the IRS has all the forms online and you can still e-file for free, but you don’t get to use any free tax preparation software.

Where is the link for e-filing without software

Go to the IRS website at [Internal Revenue Service](http://www.irs.gov) and choose “Free File” and then choose the company you want to use. If you qualify for the Federal Free file, you can also do the States. If they charge to do the States, simply print it out and mail it in instead.

[Access Free File Fillable Forms Here](http://www.irs.gov/uac/Access-Free-File-Fillable-Forms-Here) Those are the free fillable forms you can e-file for free.
