State University System Legislation

Hi Everyone,

I'm a Florida resident attending college out of state; however, a year ago I was seriously considering coming to NCF. With the Bright Futures scholarship, attending a school within the State University System seemed like a very attractive option but New is the only one I would ever consider. It is a wonderful and unique institution and is by far the best school in the system, unless the gigantic university thing works well for you.

With some degree of allegiance towards NCF to this day, I am shocked by recent legislation proposed in the state Senate by Senator Evelyn Lynn (R-7th district, which is somewhere in North Florida-Clay/Putnam Counties, etc.). Essentially, this bill would redefine the missions of the schools within the system so that UF is considered the "flagship" university of Florida. Funding and resources from the other 10 schools (NCF, FSU, UCF, USF, UNF, UWF, FAU, FIU, FAMU, FGCU) would be redirected to UF.

One of the best aspects of living in a state as big and diverse as Florida is that you can choose from amongst many, many different universities, each unique with its own strengths, programs, personalities, locations, size, etc. Why make all the other schools worse off just so that UF can have its name included with others like UMich-Ann Arbor, UIUC, and UNC-Chapel Hill?

If this bill in any way jeopardizes NCF, I would hope you would all take a stand against it. New is completely unique within Florida and to have UF drain its already limited resources would be tragic. I was lucky and got a scholarship to the perfect out of state school for me, but for most other like-minded Florida residents New is the one place to go on reduced/no tuition where they can have a truly amazing college experience. UF isn't for everyone. Don't let its name, size, and influence weaken New or any of Florida's other impressive colleges.
