State U's compared on school quality factors

Instead of just focusing on the SAT scores of the 18 year olds who happen to select one school over another here are some hard facts about what many academics would consider key indicators of the actual quality of the university itself

What about the total amount of Rhodes Scholars each school has produced? I know that UVa is number 1, and as of last year UNC and UGA were tied for second, but I haven’t been able to find a list that details the schools that aren’t in the top 3.

This list must be excluding some schools, because I knew off the top of my head that OSU’s library should be on that list. OSU’s Edmon Low Library contains 2,867,680 volumes, which would place it between Oregon and UCI. OU brags about over 5 million volumes in their libraries, ranking 27th in the nation and 2nd in the Big 12… they’re also missing from this list, because they would rank between Penn State and Pitt. Auburn has 2.7 million volumes, which would rank it between UCI and Purdue. That’s just 3 schools, out of 5 that I checked after noticing they were missing (Texas Tech and Arkansas aren’t on the list, and I checked their volumes, and it was correct to leave them off).

The library volumes were just the easiest rankings to attack. The others would involve more research and fact finding, but I’m sure they’re amiss too. Besides, there are also other lists to consider. How do the schools rank for NMS students? How do the schools rank for Truman Scholars? Goldwater Scholars? Rhodes Scholars? And so on…

Could not find aggregate stats for Truman Scholars

Some schools might not be included because they are not in the Association of American Universities which is a selective membership organization for major research universities.

[Association of American Universities](http://www.aau.edu/)

hmmm…let’s suppose I’m a top science or engineering student applying to colleges…and I eventually plan to go to graduate school to earn a doctorate…and I’m aware that it’s very competitive to get into a top graduate program…so, I conclude the best way to do this is to do research as an undergrad…and maybe compete for a top national award…

Should I go to Berkeley, which has highly ranked science and engineering departments and many faculty who are members of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering… or,
should I go to Kansas State which USNWR ranks #130 among national universities (undergraduate), has an acceptance rate of 96.2%, has no graduate science or engineering departments ranked above #75, and has few or no members of the national academies?

Well, let’s see…Kansas State undergrads have won 57 Goldwater Scholarships (through 2006). That’s only 7 fewer than Princeton and 3 fewer than Harvard. It’s 6 more than Cal Tech and 16 more than MIT. Is Berkeley even ranked in the top 20?..nope. The Goldwater Scholarship is the most pretigious US award for undergraduates in science and engineering.

It’s a tough choice…but I might be better off at Kansas State…K-State must be doing something right…

the point is that if you are a brilliant student and you take advantage of all the resources of your school as the Goldwater Scholars at Kansas State have obviously done, you can do just as well as people from Harvard.

Or, if you’re a brilliant student at Berkeley or MIT and you take advantage of all the resources your school offers, you too can do just as well as the students at Kansas State.

The other point is that indicators like the number of faculty who are members of the national academies, number of books in the library, the number of faculty awards, etc. are INPUTS. While presumably these give some indication of quality, we don’t know how they translate into OUTCOMES, except perhaps in terms of overall faculty research productivity and journal citations.

The main thing places like K state do right is package students to win awards.

^^^^ Why do you say that? Because it’s just a backward ag school and it shouldn’t get so uppity? On a level playing field, K-State students competed and did well. What’s wrong with that? With equal accuracy, one could say the main thing that places like Harvard do right is package their students to win such awards. You don’t think Harvard or any other school whose students win a Rhodes or any other major award grooms those students to do so? Whether a student who wins a Goldwater comes from K-State or Harvard, there is some meritorious basis for his or her selection; it’s not just all packaging.

I’m glad to see that extra $20 I slipped you to leave OFF Nobel winners was effective.

^ Heh…

I can get that list started.

Current faculty Nobel Prize winners:
Berkeley: 7

Barrons, you should throw in some top privates for comparison purposes… ;)

A couple–different source some some small variations.

Those are curious “Tags”, but I think they’d take better care of you in a private school setting. ;)

Zapinfo,

The Goldwater and the Rhodes are very different beasties. The Goldwater is done by state of college attendance and each college is capped at 4 nominees each.

Rhodes winners are selected in 16 multistate regions, but since a student can apply in either the region of residence or the region of his college, they are in practice much more national.

Because of this, a college can have far more Rhodes winners than Marshall, and a few colleges, most notably Harvard, do - as many as 8 in one year if I recall correctly.

So Rhodes wins clearly demonstrate student achievement at the highest level, with one caveat: The rhodes announcements typically score based on undergraduate institution, even though a third or more of the winners win after they graduated, some as many as two or three years later. These older winners reflect just as much on their post-graduate accomplishments, but that does not seem to be counted.

Oh, one more thing: Winning a Rhodes is not just about packaging. Anyone who thinks so just does not know many Rhodes scholars.
