I've wanted to go to state since I was a kid because my dad went there, but now it is sort of my back-up to Carolina. I find new things to like about it every day, but I'm not sure if I'll get in or not. If I am rejected by Carolina, I'm definitely going to state, but I just can't get excited about it because it doesn't seem like fun. I don't hear about students loving being at State, feeling at home there,or loving the happy attitudes of people there. I don't drink, but I want to be excited to go to college and have something fun to do with great people. Can anyone tell me more about the social aspect of NC state? thanks in advance. And please don't think I'm trying to be offensive.

clarification: I find new things to like about Carolina* everyday

(whoops)

S graduated from State last May (his Dad went to State too :). He turned down Carolina for State and never regretted it. He visited friends at Carolina but was always glad to go back home to Raleigh. He had a blast in the dorm (Owen) freshman year, met friends who are still his friends. State does not have the pretentious attitude that many Tarheels carry around. The social life at State is not Greek dominated.

State has plenty of stuff to get involved in, various campus events, clubs, intramurals. Always lots of activities during Homecoming week.
S was in ROTC which took a lot of his time.
One roommate was on the sailing team. Other roommate played intramural flag football.
A friend’s D, who got rejected from Carolina and went to State loves it. She’s into music so was in the marching band for 2 years and now plays in a Jazz Ensemble.
She was somewhat disappointed about not getting in UNC and planned to transfer after freshman year but liked State so much after her fresh. year that she dropped her plan to transfer and is a happy soph. now.
The football games were one of S’s favorite things. Tailgating is a real event.
He had a great group of friends who were all about fun.
He loves State and would make the same decison if he had it to do over.

Do you know any friends at State? Talk to them and see if they think it’s fun. Maybe you could go send a night/weekend there.

No matter where you go, you’ll be happy. Every person I know who planned to transfer (anywhere) decided not to because they adjusted socially and learned to love it. Both schools are big enough that you will find some friends that have similar social attitudes as you. That’s the beauty of a big school. Both schools have a great faculty.

The only thing UNC has over State, at least in the public’s perception, is greater prestige and a prettier campus. The prestige is really not important for your undergrad degree, and is debatable anyway ;). Carolina does have a prettier campus, but you are giving up Raleigh’s nightlife for it. You’ll be happy wherever you go.

UNC has more prestige, a prettier campus, hotter girls (not to mention the 60-40 girl-guy ratio) and better athletics.

State has more down-to earth people and access to a better city. State also has less ******bags than UNC.

Bottom line is, you have to decide what is more important to you.

LOL, Cuse0507. Camico didn’t mention his/her gender so hotter girls may not be a factor.
My NCSU S always said Carolina girls had to come to NCSU to find regular guys.
His roommate’s gf was a Carolina Law Sch. student that went to NCSU for undergrad. She came back to Raleigh every weekend.

I’m not surprised-a lot of guys at Carolina are jerks and many that aren’t are gay. Like I said, State people are generally more down-to-earth and are easier to get along with. State’s somewhat lopsided male-female ratio is also offset somewhat by its close proximity to Meridith College.

I went to the State-Carolina game last night and I did notice that those dressed in blue (not necessarily UNC students or alumni) were the unattractive people who were wearing nice khakis and looking awfully stiff (although the abundance of state fans could have caused that!). The State students were, as my dad calls them, “real people,” not as snobby-seeming. I know I’m basing this off a sporting event and that random fans aren’t an equal representation of a student body, but I was much less worried about being rejected from Carolina when I left. And even though I went in wanting UNC to win, I resented every UNC shot scored… and has anyone else noticed the argyle on the UNC jerseys???

Back to the subject… I have now been accepted to NCSU (fyc…). I am definitely taking a tour when it gets warmer. and I am a female, but I have a boyfriend.

Thanks to everyone who answered!

The Carolina fans were stiff because they’re used to being doused with drinks and cursed at when they go to pretty much any NCSU sporting event.

^^^^As they should be…it’s no different when State visits Chapel Hill, lol.

Camico,Congrats to you on your acceptance to NCSU. If you should decide to go to State, by virtue of being in FYC you are eligible to choose Tucker or Owen as your residence hall.
S lived in Owen as a freshman and absolutely loved it. Grab a room in Tucker or Owen if you go to State.

^^ I have heard the same thing about the FYC dorms. They are apparently awesome, if you are a very social person.

My son is a freshman at State,so I can offer you this…he LOVES State. He is so happy there! He never lacks for something to do…and he never comes home because he has so many friends at school. He has enjoyed the football games, played on the club hockey team, goes to concerts at the brewery, gone home with a friend who lives at the outer banks, goes to frat parties, ( though is not joining one). And if there are less women than men, you wouldn’t know it by listening to him! I could go on, but even when he doesn’t “go out” he is never bored in the dorms. He was disppointed when he was deferred/waitlisted/denied at Carolina. Now he wouldn’t want to be anywhere else!
