I'll be applying to Northwestern this fall. This summer I'll be attending the NJ Governor's School of Engineering & Technology, at which we complete research projects in groups of four, each under an advisor (past papers: Gov School Research Papers | Rutgers University School Of Engineering ). Would I be able to write about this experience for the "statement of research" essay question for NU's app?

I should think so! The “statement of research” doesn’t have to be about something which is done independently. I’m sure by now you realize the vast amount of research is done collaboratively, especially in STEM. This is why the number of names on any one paper can be large.

Are you at all interested in interdisciplinary study? If you are, you may want to check out the Integrated Science Program at Northwestern U. My S is finishing his freshman year in the program. His summer between junior and senior year in HS, he worked with an earth sciences professor, doing some work in the paleoclimatology area. His essay to NU spoke to the work he did here, his recognition of the interdsiciplinary aspects of cutting edge science today, and his recognition of what NU offers in this regard.
