California high school students who attain eligibility in the statewide context are guaranteed a space at the University of California, though not necessarily the campus or major of choice. If I apply to only, say, UCSB, would I be guaranteed a spot there? If not, how many UC’s do I have to apply to to be guaranteed a spot at any UC?

Students who are eligible though the statewide context (4.01% to 12% of the high school class) are guaranteed a spot at UC Merced. ELC students (top 4%) are guaranteed a spot at UCM, UCR, UCD, UCSB and UCI.

The operative phrase is “not necessarily the campus or major of your choice.” Depending on how competitive you are, you may have a very good chance of getting into a lot of the UCs. The guarantee is simply there to placate anxious parents and students.

For Fall 2011, Merced is doing the Statewide Eligibility guarantee. If you apply to UCSB and get rejected, your application will be forwarded to Merced for acceptance.
