Statistics at a LAC

I've recently become really interested in studying statistics and possibly doing graduate work in biostatistics after college, but I'd still like to have a small-school environment. However, none of the LACs I applied to offer statistics majors, only general math majors. But, they do allow students to create their own majors, and they do offer a few courses in statistics. Anyone have any experience creating their own major at a LAC? Would it be possible for a major like statistics?

Check out Harvey Mudd College. Its very math/sciencey. But I’m not sure if they offer exactly what you are looking for. Its worth a try! Also, if you are a strong enough applicant- Caltech.

When I was an undergrad at a LAC I was on the curriculum committee which approved student-designed majors. Most of them tended to be specializations in some area of social studies rather than math/science. I would recommend you check the web sites of some larger schools to see what a major in statistics consists of, and then see how much of that is available at the LAC’s you’re looking at. If you can make up the difference with a couple independent studies, it might be feasible. In general, though, it’s not a good idea to pick a college that doesn’t offer a degree in the field you want to major in. If you’re certain you want to major in statistics, you’re best off looking at schools that already offer it as a major.

It is possible that the following LACs offer statistics:
Barnard - NYC
U Minnesota, Morris
Luther College IA
Ohio Northern U

In which state do you live?
Are you male or female?
