Does anyone know of good schools that have a good applied statistics or data science programs?
A range of schools support programs or offer courses in data science subfields such as, for example, bioinformatics, so your approach to college selection may depend on whether you have particular interests along these lines.
I am more interested in the applied statistics field.
SUNY-Stony Brook, URochester?
A good way to figure this out is to look at who is offering data science courses on Coursera.
It looks like U Washington, U Michigan, UIUC, Hopkins, UCSD, and more. Check it out.
Data science is a fairly new field that hasn’t trickled down to most undergraduate schools yet. It’s also a fairly niche area. You could put together a program that covers data science (which is really a combo of statistics/applied math and computer science) at a lot of schools that have math, applied math, statistics, and computer science majors, especially if they have other related fields (like industrial engineering and operations research). For example, Columbia doesn’t have a formal data science major with the name “data science,” but you can easily put together a program of study that emphasizes data science and they have tons of resources in this area at the university. In fact, if you look at the list of majors, programs, and concentrations “data science” is listed, although the link takes you to the CS major webpage.
Carnegie Mellon also has a “statistics and machine learning” major that is essentially data science. Stanford’s major in mathematical and computational science.
