Stats 21 w/ Ibser

Does anyone know how stats 21 went down? I did far worse than my worst case scenario, so I really want to find out exactly what went wrong. It seems like the final was the culprit, but unless the average was 160/200, there was no way I did so poorly.

Is Stats21 with Ibser better than Purves?
I’m a prospective Haas applicant and I was thinking about taking Stats21 in spring 2010 since I got a 5 on Stats junior year and I don’t want to forget all my Stats. (I was going to take it this fall, but then I heard horrific stories about Stats with Purves, who is the only teacher for fall 2009).

Purves is obscenely hard, and Ibser is a much nicer guy, albeit very boring lecturer. I found Stats to be the hardest class I’ve taken thus far, mainly because the curve ensures that you can never do well enough. I don’t know why ppl complain about ba10, this class is much more trickier/harder to get a good grade

Both have essentially the same curve so grade-wise, they are relatively the same.

I have no experience with Purves but from what others say, his class seems like more of a headache.

Oh mann :frowning: Thanks for the input

So would you recommend taking Stats spring of 2010 or just waiting until sophomore year?

depends on your taste. Would you rather get destroyed by the final and have your grade somewhat salvaged by the curve, or feel good about the final only to get screwed over by the curve?

I would rather get a good grade.
SIGH!
I’m taking Econ001, Anthro2ac, Math16A, and Nutrisci10 fall semester.
Was thinking about UGBA10, Stats21, Math16B, and maybe Sociology 1 or ESPM50ac for spring semester (2010) but now that Stats is apparently sooo hard… :(

I’m just scared of what would happen if I waited until spring semester of my sophomore year to take Stats21 and it gets full or something :(

As long as you phase I Stat 21 in Spring '10, you’ll get in for sure.

stats with ibser was really boring… me and my friend tried to go to every lecture before the first midterm but stopped going completely soon after. lectures are webcasted… didn’t watch anyways

tests are tricky, you should try to figure out every single question on the study guide he posts before the midterms/finals. class isn’t too impossible though, I got an A =)

Do the study guides really help for tests?
And had you taken AP Stats in high school?

yea i took it, got a 4
and yeah he gave us like 10 pages of problems for the midterm and like 15 pages for the final. really similar to questions on the final.

I was thinking of taking stats 21 during fall 09. but I guess since Ibser is easier than Purves, I’ll take stats over the summer then.

is it recommended though? It is an 17 week course taken in 8 weeks

also, it says that Stark is teaching fall 09. should i wait for stark or just take ibser over summer?

Referring to the first post:

Yea, I did worse than I thought I would. The average for the final must have been pretty high. Or we got screwed over by the curve.

workethic:

how hard was the class? did the final drag you down by a lot?

To be honest, the midterm was relatively easy compared to the final. In my opinion, the midterm basically assessed whether you can do the problems or not. The final assessed your understanding for the material, which can be confusing at times.

The ave on Ibser’s final was 138 with SD of 37. The final was not only harder than I thought, but people seemed to do just as well on it as on the much more straightforward midterm, which completely annihilated my grade in the class :(
