STATS 2120 - Intro to Statistical Analysis ?

This question is for someone who has taken Stats 2120 - Intro to Statistical Analysis or who is familiar with the course level of difficulty.

Would you advise a student (who never had taken Stats) to take Stats 1100 - Chance: An Intro to Statistics in order to to get the basic understanding of Stats before taking Stats 2120 - Intro to Statistical Analysis ?

Your insights will be so much appreciated.

I didn’t take STAT 1100, but I did take 2120. It was a nightmare. The material itself wasn’t terribly bad (as I found out when I took Intro to Social Statistics later on), but the presentation of it is generally awful. Be prepared to teach it to yourself if you do not have a good TA or are not mathematically inclined. It’s been like 3 years since I took that class, but all the different sections would take the test at the same time and professors would rotate who wrote the test…so if your professor didn’t cover something or not in the same way, you’d be in trouble. Ask around and find out which of the professors teaching it does the best job.

I had not taken any statistics prior to 2120 and while it was rough, I don’t think the lack of preparation had hurt me. You start at a pretty basic level and then work into more complicated materials.

I’ve never taken either, but I’ve heard only bad things about STAT 2120. STAT 1100 won’t get you the necessary credit to fulfill the stat requirement, so you will have to take two stat classes if you want to do 1100 before 2120.

wahoogrl08 and wacawaca – Thank you very much for your feedback comments!

Is there any helpful tutoring assistance available to students on Grounds? How often the tutors can meet with the students? Is the tutoring available on an as needed basis or is there formal tutoring hours (ie, walk-in during tutoring hours) ?

Has anyone taken Stat 2120 (Intro to Statistical Analysis) over the summer? If taken elsewhere over the summer, how do you make sure that the credits will be transferred/accepted?

I am hopeful to receive more feedback on the initial question as well as these additional follow up questions. Thank you for the help!
