Should an applicant with strong stats (1500-1600 SAT, 34-36 ACT, 3.9+ GPA) but weak EC's apply to top schools?

yes. how weak?

the usual clubs and about 100 hours of community service, few leadership positions

i hate people like that. why not apply? you have nothing to lose. Rickpaul stop acting stupid.

i dont know on the last board they were striking me down because of my "non existant" ec's

just cuz they are weak it doesnt mean that you cant apply.

yes definitely apply. For someone w/ your kind of stats, it just takes a little something special to tip you in. For most people this is their EC's, but if your essay is extremely memorable, etc you may get in anywhere you apply.

However, you shouldn't be shocked if you were rejected from all of the Ivies...which could happen. Outside of the most selective tier, those grades/tests will put you at a "match" or "safety" at just about every school. Find a few of these that you like just in case, but Ivies+S+M+C, etc are def. possible w/ those qualifications.
