Stats Evaluation Please!

Hey, here are my current stats as for applying to colleges.

Junior
3.32 G.P.A (I should have tried harder freshman and sophmore years)
ACT- 30
Writing ACT 10/12

Extracurricular:
Sports: None, I tried but I just couldn't
Mathlete
Scholastic Bowl
Spanish Club
Red Surge (A gay school spirit club)
150 hours of volunteer work at St. Mary's Hospital
Currently I have a job as a "Partner" at the same hospital working in the Emergency Room. I do all kinds of things from transferring patients to floors to admitting them through Triage.

I have taken all the required courses to get into a 4-year college, including 4 years of Spanish, and I am currently in A.P.U.S.H. and will be taking A.P. Biology and English next year. My math is so far up to Trig and then next year to Pre-Cal.

I am a minority I guess because I'm Indian so I don't know what that has going for me. I live in Illinois. My parents want me to go to U of I at Urbana, but I want to get as far away from them as physically possible. So, since U of I is ranked at 42 (USNEWS) I need to get in somwhere in the top 40ish. I don't know what schools I really want to go to, but here are some possible choices.

University of Chicago- I know it's in Illinois but I do want to go to a big city
University of California–Berkeley
University of California–Los Angeles
University of Michigan–Ann Arbor
New York University

These are all in the top 40, I also want to go to a place I will like to live at for 4 years, big city, not a small town. So location is a important factor. These are the only ones I listed because I think I might have a small chance to get into them. But anywhere in the top 40 that is a good schoolin a good city location is fine with me, but I don't think my stats are good enough for those. I also definitely don't want to go somewhere in the south (No TN, GA, Al...). I alslo probably will take my SAt's and since I score in my 30's on my ACT Reading and English and the math is supposed to be easier ( my math score was like a 26) I hope I get somehwere in the 1500's. What are my chances for going somewhere good?

How many AP's total did you have? If you have say.. at least 4-5, then you should have a good chance at UChicago (as long as u only did bad 9/10th grade, and do well GPA wise jr and sr years) if you wanan go to any of those schools then you need to get ur ACT math up.. especially for UCHicago.
I would say reach for UCLA but just to be honest i dont think you have a chance, because you're out of state, and grades are their NUMBER 1 thing, and class rank can't be that good if you have a 3.32 (i'm not dissin on u, i only have a 3.4). same at UCB. NYU is match.. your GPA is a little low there also, but ur ACT is good, and keep ur jr sr grades up and u should be fine there and at UMICH

thanks. I honestly thought i didn't have a chance in the world. I should have about 4 APS. and my class rank is at about a 120 out of 750 but i am in the top 25 percent of my class. what about my hospital work will it help alot or a little? and so far i have gotten a's in all my classes this year, but my gpa at a 3.32 is weighted do universitys only look ato unweighted gpa's?

4 AP's is good, for those schools. class rank looks good (not for UC's) sorry to say no to the UC's but i'm not gonna lead u on. I wouldnt say anything but FAR reach for anyone below 10-12% of their class. a 3.32 is cumulative i assume? if u have upward grade trend, they like that (they prefer straight A's all thru HS, lol, but an upward grade trend will do LOTS of good for ur relatively poor cumulative. the hospital work will help yes. since u have plenty of hours it will show commitment. NYU will like you i think. I'm applying there also.
Universities look at both weighted, and unweighted gpa. i mean if you have a 3.0 UW that isn't great, but if you're in ALL Honors/AP's, then it is BETTER than a kid who has a 3.6 but with only like 1, if any, honor classes. but yeah ur still a junior like me so we have plenty of time to get our grades up (2 more semesters will be on the off. cumulative gpa and transcript). the next 2 semesters are the MOST IMPORTANT!!! make them count! i messed up frosh and soph years too.. like i said, upward grade trend shows that u got focused on school. i mean they dont expect frosh at 14 Y.O. to be able to be focused and know that their grades will impact them in college.

yeah nyu was somewhere where i really wanted to go. good school good city, good peopl, i mean im going to be there for 4 years of my life might as well enjoy it. and yeah my gpa is cummulative, thanks for your help i hope to see u at nyu if i get in, and good luck to you too

i could use some help so if anybody has anything to say, good or bad, speak now or forever hold your peace

If your a real Native American, you have a very goo hook.
If your from the subcontinent, It's no a hook.

brownman:

UCLA: Reach (out of state)

i kind of new that, but is their any other advice you guys have for me?

No chance at Berk/LA.

good shot at others.

Hey man I have very similar stats except my GPA is UW 3.32.

errrr I have been doing A LOT of research these past two months. Like seriously, I think my grades have been going DOWN because I spend all my time on this and obsessing over nothing. Like I have an APUSH test tommorow, haven't read the chapter and its 11:00. =/ eh.

anyway, those schools you have listed are exactly the schools I would like to go to.

but we have a major problem.

every school on there are reaches, Umich, LA, and Berkely being the hardest.

I say NO chance at all for UCB and UCLA. less than 5% chance for UChicago.

eeeh dude NYU is my number one. I seriously doubt admission for either of us.

you certainly have a chance, but I say choose some solid schools and many safeties. UCI and UCSD, UCSB are great match/reachish schools if you want California. Boston University would be a high match/ reach

good luck!

:]

I'm also surprised everyone is so nice when they respond. **** dude. When I posted, people completley flipped out and started dissing one another.

shiz.

No offense or anything, but I think you should add some safeties to your list. Since you're only a junior, you have time. Good luck!

I know that those schools will be hard to get into but I will definetly apply, and I seriously plan on applying to about 20 schools.

Yes, I am applying to 20 schools also. I agree with cali kid, add some safeties. i disagree with "the brown" though..
I am certain you would get in. you are at the 25-50% percentile for GPA for BU, which might not sound optimistic, but you are at the 75% for ACT for admitted kids. You're a junior, like me. I have another idea for you. If you took the ACT as a soph, ur like me. i took it as a soph and got a 30. i took it beginning of this year (9 months later) and got a 29. i was like ***? Since then, i took it every single test date, and each time, my score has goneup by one. I think that consecutive testing may be a good trick. So basically, if you can get your score higher, you are going above the 75% for BU. and you're a minority. and you have upward grade trend? Please, "thebrown" look into BU's stats, don't make this dude feel bad. I'm looking at BU as a safety school for me, and brownman's stats are BARELY lower than mine, so it is definitely a match for him.
NYU is a little harder than BU but keep in mind, we're evaluating u as if ur applying now, so ur stats will rise (if u keep working hard).. so i would say by the time ur applying it will be a match.
but yeah i'm applying to like 20 schools.. my theory is, if ivies have a 12% admit rate, and I apply to 8 ivies, There is a 96% chance i will get into one of them, right? (theoretically, lol) I guess i'm thinking that it's like a crap shoot. the more bullets ya got, the better chance u have of knocking some of them down. ( a crapshoot is where you stand at a spot w/ a shotgun, and a machine launches these red clay disks in the air and u shoot them for target practice)

I feel u, and now Im confused about percintiles Lol. I am at the 25 percintile for GPA at my HS, so that means I am better than 75 percent of the 750 students at my HS. My class rank is like around 120 out o 750. And I already do plan on taking my ACT 2 more times, so far I have only taken it once, an for the percent thing at BU do you mean that 75 percent of the people admitted to BU have a higher GPA, and that I have a higher ACT than 25 percent. So does that mean the closer I get to the percentage mark the better I am? So should I really say I am at the top 75 percent of my class rather than the top 25 percent? I m confused!!!! Help!!!

sorry! lol.. I never realized that it is backwards for HS/college.
ok for colleges, we usually say "75th percentile" meaning that 74% of the people who are admitted score LOWER than you.. so ur ahead of 74% of the admittees for ACT.
for HS.. if someone says "top 5%".. the key word is "top" that essentially means 95% percentile, meaning you have a better GPA tahn 94% of your classmates.

so, at BU. about 60% of the accepted kids had a better GPA than you (but 40% had a lower GPA)
, and 25% had a higher ACT than you.. or 74% had a lower ACT.

hope that clears it up?

yeah thanks, could use more help

I could use some help!!!

Currently I am a Junior attending school in Bourbonnais, Illinois. I recieve my education at the Bradley Bourbonnais Community High School. "BBCHS" sucks monkey nuts dipped in tobasco sauce simmered on low. I honestly wish I had tried harder my Freshman and Sophmore years rather than playing video games and watching television. So, in other words, I was not actively involved in sports and clubs my first 2 years of HS. Which limited my involvement in sports this year to none, because how the f uck can I make Varsity Tennis?!!! Who the f uck cares if I am Indian and Indian's are supposed to play tennis??? Screw tennis. Sorry, I hate tennis. As of right now here are my stats.

Freshman Year Courses:
World Studies
Algebra 1
Spanish 1
Biology
P.E./Health

Sophmore Year Courses:
Economics/Sociology
Spanish 2
Formal Geometry
Chemistry
Sophmore English
P.E.

Junior Year Courses:
Spanish 3
Algebra 2/Trig
Physics
AP U.S. History
Junior English
P.E.

Future Senior Courses:
Spanish 4
Pre-Calculus
AP Biology
Psychology/College Bound Composition
AP English
P.E.
Human Anatomy and Physiology

Current EC's:
Red Surge ( It's like a pep club you sign up for, you don't have to do anything but pay the $dollar fee. It's just something to put down.)

I have this amazing job at the hospital in my town. Provena St. Mary's Hospital (It won the JD Power award last year for something)
I work there as sort of a volunteer that can be paid except I can do more things and I work in a specified area. I work in the Emergency Room/Triage. I do all kinds of things from taking vitals on patients, blood pressures, transferring patients to and from floors, admitting patients through Triage area, stocking rooms , and cleaning rooms. Is this different from regular volunteer work? I mean don't volunteers do stupid gay things? Like talk to people and help feed them? This is supposed to be a job experience and should not be put down as volunteer work. Will UC look at as an important factor on my resume? I also work 20 hours a week, five days a week. My title is a "Partner". I will have a full 2 year work experince there by the time I start to send applications in.

Freshman Mentor (Like a peer tutor except only for Freshman)

I also did Mathletes Sophmore year, can I just put down that I was a Mathlete and not specify for how many years, hopefully they will assume for the full HS years, right?

Next Year EC's:
I will join my Spanish Club, the Ecology Club, and I will do Scholastic Bowl (I did it for a short time during sophmore year, around a month, and I will most likely be on Varsity because I will be a Junior.) And the same with all these clubs, will I have to specify how long? Because that would suck.
I also during the summer plan on doing 200 hours of just volunteer work at my hospital while doing my ER job. This is the reason they should be counted as two different things beacuse I will already have volunteer work down on my resume. Does anyone agree with me? I will also be able to get the reccomendation of the CEO of the hospital, because my dad is a doctor there and personally knows him, he is also my neighbor. Will that help out?

Now the real problem with my resume is my GPA. Since, I did not apply myself it is relatively low. By the endo of Junior year it will be a 3.32 W, and about a 3.15 UW. Will UC pay more attention to the UW? Does it present an issue? Won't they notice I have taken core college classes along with AP classes? I also will probably do some medical programs through my local college and also some extra classes. Will this help when I put it on my resume?

As for ACT score here they are

Composite: 27 Writing 10/12

English: 28
Math:24
Reading:28
Science:26

I have only taken it once, and I didn't study at all, (bad idea) So far I have been able to get both my English and Reading scores well in the 30's, as of now I haven't worked on my Science and Math, I hopefully can raise my math up by 2 or 3 points with some review, and my scince as well. Will UC look at my score individually and decide from those to? Like since my math is low will they take that in account or will they look at my composite only? And since they don't require the writing portion of the ACT will I get some brownie points for taking it and doing fairly wel on it? And I know I can for sure raise my score into the 30's. So when taking in consideration whether I can get in pretend that my ACT is at least a 30.

I also want to know about location, you see I wan to go to a big city and what better in state city than Chicago? Are there clubs and, like concert places around, you see I am a big music goer and I listen to like Emo and Hardcore music, yes you can lable me as an Emo Indian, I admit that. So I wanted to know that, and is where UC located close to the good Chicago? I mean the shopping areas and restaraunts and stuff like that? And as for the girls. Well, let me tell you that is an important factor, they had better be hot. Please tell me you have your hot girls there?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And are things walking distance or will I need a car?
And this may sound a bit racist, but I don't want to go to a school overpopulated with black ghetto people because I hate rap ****?
When are application deadlines due? Because if they are due after January that will be better for me because my GPA porobably will be around a 3.45 by then, and that is alot better than what I will have at the end of this year.
As for essays I plan on spending alot of time on them, making the perfect and very unique. Is there anything else I missed? LOL Can I do anything to improve my chances of getting in, and honestly please give me my true chances. I have other schools of choice such as NYU, Brown University, Johns Hopkins University, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Michigan, University of Southern California, University of California–Berkeley, University of California–San Diego, and University of Illinois–Urbana-Champaign.

These are some of my other choices, can any one help me on my chances of getting in to any of these? And is there a big difference in out of state and in state tuition? Because if I don't get into UC than all my other schools are out of state, and my dad for one thing doesn't really want me going out of state, and the tuition being 3 times as much out of state could be a problem, even if he is a doctor. One other thing is that these are all the shools of my choices I have to get into at least one of these schools, so be honest about my chances, because there are really no other schools I want to go to. And I really won't be shattered if you guys tell me if I can't get into UC because I won't mind at all if I have to go to my other choices. The only reason Im kind of set on UC is because it is in state and I like Chicago because it is a big city. I know this is a big post but I could use everyones help. However, one way or another I will not let my dad pick where I am going to college so please evaluate my other choices!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!

is the 3.47 weighted? also, you need a minimum 30 to look anywhere. Errr, what is your UC GPA? [10-11 high school grades] + [8 semesters of AP/honors]

if it goes higher- UCSD: slight reach because you are out of state. You know, out of state UC is much harder, because 3.4 is the cutoff. Apply to UCI UCR UCM UCSB UCSC UCSD. I doubt Berkely and LA will accept, partly you are out of state, meaning you have to be EVEN MORE competitive. I tihnk you'll get into Irvine and below, but San Diego and Davis will be tough. [not that tough, but still]

depends what you want to do at NYU, if you want business at Stern, then you have 0% chance. if you want to apply to a different school in NYU such as CAS, then it might work.

"emo" indian. How shallow. I'm Indian as well, but am more into the Indie-pop and power-pop thing. I still enjoy warped tour w/ some screamo bands though. did you go last year? FFTL, the bled and underOATH were awesome. the rejects and offspring were good too.
if you want the hardcore scene, go to San Francisco or New York. I live in/ next to SFO, you'll find a lot of **** to do.

U of Iillinois- =/
Berkely- =/
NYU- maybe
Umich- maybe
Uchicago- no.

choose safeties and more matches. get that ACT up.

good luck.
