stats for admission

Can anyone tell me what the average scores and grades are in order to get into usc. Is it more competitive out of state. And what is the campus like i havent been there yet and want to get a better idea......

no one has any ideas?

Well... it depends on what you say competitive is. I got in with nearly a full scholarship from out of state with a 28 ACT, 3rd/350ish, lots of ECs, sports, etc. I know another girl who had similar scores and got a similar scholarship. She decided to go there, I did not. I don't think its THAT competitive... look on their website for averages and such.
Good luck!

My d visited USC on a recruiting trip. We found it to be a beautiful campus. The main area called the Horse Shoe is historic. It is a walking campus. Iron gates close the campus to traffic during the day.The sports facilities surround the campus. The football facility which seats 86,000 fans is about a 15 minute walk. The dorm my d stayed in was an apartment with four bedrooms for four girls and well maintained. The honors dorm is located on the Horse Shoe and I believe is a historical building. It is very impressive. There are Fellowships / Awards for Study in Russia and Scholarship for Study in Japan which are available, at least this year. They have study abroad.

There is a great deal of building taking place all around the campus and they aren't holding back....the new buildings are outstanding.

The honors college which is called the Palmetto Ivy requires a 1300/29. There are 1000 students in the honors college. I believe we were told the average was 1450.

You can qualify for a Cooper Scholarship with a 28 ACT (last year) which means 10,000 a year plus instate fees. The Strong Thurman center (sports center for student body) is nothing less than spectacular. There is a new area where all the frats are located......two and half million for each house.. ..I can only guess but I believe there were at least 20 with more in the process of being built. They were nothing short of magnificant, southern mansions.

The students are very friendly and I have never seen so many attractive young people. Students are very preppy...(abercrombie/ lilly, coach). I believe the University is no longer one step behind UNC. USC has one of the top interntaional business schools in the nation and the huge marine science program enjoys a 17,000 acre facility about three hours from the campus. They have paid a great deal of money to attact the top professors.

Although we are from New England we found that good old fashioned southern charm rules the roost of the Game ****.....and my d found it to be very welcoming and she was very impressed with the professors which she has the opportunity to meet. She thought they were very engaging. She met with with the head of a department (he spent two hours with her). She came out of the meeting so motivated.
My d couldn't stop talking about the people she met.... .....and of course the SEC football is exciting. My d is graduating from a very competitive hs. She has taken all AP and honors classes and will be graduating in the top 10% of her class. Her experience was extremely positive. (other schools she has visited Boston College, William and Mary, Bucknell, Duke, UVA, Penn State.)

She loved the weather.......hope this helps you.
Good luck.....it is worth a visit....

Our daughter had the same experience. She also loved U of South Carolina. We walked into the Fine Arts building just to see it (it was not on the tour) and the Music Adcom invited us into her office where she encouraged DD to apply and audition as a non-major. They have been corresponding via email since than (over a year ago). The university had a huge variety of majors and other opportunities that DD really liked. The cost (especially compared to the NE) was reasonable even as a OOS student. Right now DD's combined CR/Math SAT is at 1200, but she is retaking on Saturday. If she gets over 1300 this time, she will complete the honors college application (which is a VERY rigorous application!!). She will audition on her instruments (oboe, English horn) and hopes to get a scholarship for that which would also give her instate tuition. We would be very happy with this choice if that is where she goes. She is also applying to two schools in California...

The fine arts building was so inviting and impressive.....

Good luck....to your d. If you receive a scholarship you automatically receive in state fees. I believe UNC just instituted the same procedure. What a wonderful opportunity.

My d was on a recruiting trip to Boston College and she felt USC would be a better fit. We always thought BC would be her first choice...but she was so impressed with the eight professors which she met at USC....the Department Head invited her to attend a conference which is being held on campus in November....he has kept in contact with her...... ...it appears you had the same experience..

how about admission for an out of stater? we've read the website, but what do you think would be the minimum GPA and SAT or ACT score ?
(EC's aside)
thanks - on paper, USC looks ideal....we'll visit in the spring

(without scholarship)

mishdoob1.....Did you know USC has rolling admissions.....you can apply now...the turn around time is short. I suggest you give admissions a call about requirement, but my best guess would be a min of 26 on the ACT and 1230 on SAT....but that is only one part.......good luck....

didn't know about rolling admissions - thanks!

I believe USC sends out applications. When we took the tour they were in the process of placing an application on line. My d hasn't checked because we have the paper ap.

USC and Clemson are huge rivals but my d loved Clemson as much as USC......it is located on Lake Hartwell and is as beautiful as UNC just on a smaller scale....you should take a look at Clemson.....alot of things to do....dirt biking, boating, water skiing, hiking, swimming....very friendly campus......have fun exploring....

My daughter is applying to U of South Carolina. She has the paper application. She did check and the application is online, but it looked like it had to be printed out and filled in...and mailed...could not be filed online. So...she is doing a paper application that will be sent in...Friday...yahoo.

thumper1 and birdie

Son's next app to be completed is U S Carolina's...and oh boy, that honors college/scholarship app is something...thanks for the detailed tour reviews, as we can't visit until the late winter or early spring.
He's contacted the local admissions rep here in New York and is hoping the guy will visit his high school or arrange a meeting outside of the school. Eveything looks good on paper,we have the walking tour video as well.My misgivings are the northern boy in a southern school idea..and exactly what the political/religious atmosphere of the campus is like..I was a little put off by the prominence of the religious affiliation question on the application...And exactly how many OOS'ers are there, and where in the U.S. are they from...,and do many kids stay around on weekends (besides the football weekends)...Hopefully the admit rep will be able to help out with some answers but if you got any feel for these issues, can you let me know?
Thanks
Cathy

cathymee

There are only 12% from out of state, but UNC has only 18% out of state.... imo I think your son will be fine....... I believe we were told that 72% of the campus is caucasian 2% hispanic, 2% Asian, 2% international, 16% African American...

My d met recruits from North Carolina, Maryland, California (Napa Valley), Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Delaware.......

I think you are going to see many out of state kids in the honors college.......

I believe 40% of the students live on campus and it is not a suitcase school.

As far as the religious issue...I guess we do have to remember we are in the bible belt....but my d didn't feel it was an issue....

I would say the typical student is polite, courteous, holds doors and smiles when a stranger walks by...I do think the Southern Hospitality prevails....but my d found it a very easy adjustment....

Well Cathy good luck to your s.....if my d decides to go there I will let you know....

Birdie, funny you say that. Right now DD's combined CR/Math is 1200 (she retook on Oct 8). She has a class rank of 8/194 and weighted gpa of 3.8. Her GC says U of South Carolina is a safety school for her. However she LOVES the school and would be very happy to go there. It is big.

thumper

I agree with your GC, but I strongly suggest that you apply now. I believe because they have rolling admissions the freshman class fills quickly. Although it is a safety school for her don't wait. With her gpa (which is looked at more heavily than the testing) I have no doubt that she will be accepted. You may hear from admissions in less than two weeks. Knowing that she has been admitted to a school she loves will allow her to continue her search with a sense of relief.

My d feels the same as your d, she loves the school and the students and she is very tired of snow.

My d stats are similar to your d, but my d took the ACT (she finished in the middle of the middle 50% for top LAC) .

It is funny how things change. We anticipated her sport would allow her the opportunity to attend schools with acceptance rates under 15% because she had a hook (plus the stats). At the beginning of her search those were the schools she wanted to visit and where she contacted the coaches. Then she decided LAC wasn't what she wanted. I think I new that long before she did and I am so glad I was patient enough to allow her to realize that for herself.

We live in a community where everyone is a Doctor, Lawyer or CEO. As a family we are very happy here, but the competition to say you are attending a top LAC or Ivy is out of hand. I must admit we got caught up in the frenzy. It is tough when you have a Yale Grad living on one side and a Harvard Grad living on the other side and across the street a Duke Grad. They are the best neighbors but each wanted her to go to their school. They were all athletes as well.

This was the trump card......
When my d visited USC the head of the department spent two hours with her. He introduced her to eight full professors in his department.
They reviewed their backgrounds with her and she just couldn't stop talking about their experiences and backgrounds. She was introduced to the secretaries and clerks in that particular college and she was so impressed at how much it was like a family. The department head then invited her to come back in November for a conference. Although it is big you d will find her space and it won't seem so large.

My d has three more recruiting trips but I feel the writing is on the wall....

Isn't is great when the girls can say they LOVE a school!

Take care thumper....much happiness to you and your daughter...

thanks for the info, folks.Am attempting to get S to complete the application...the Honor's supplement is intimidating,to say the least.
Trying to get the admissions rep to see him here in NY,he told me he'd be here next week, and then will visit in the spring. So far they are the only "paper" application, all others are online!

Cathymee....I suggest you take the tour of the horse shoe when you visit in the spring....(there are several different tours going on at the same time....visiting different areas of the university.......it will give you s a feeling of how small a large school can feel.... once you have toured the horse shoe..then visit the surrounding facilities....I felt it gave my d a great feel for the campus........Honors dorms are located in the Horse shoe..... the best location to classrooms....enjoy your trip....

thanks Birdie for all the info and encouragement
size isnt an issue for S,he's looking mostly at large U's with an Honor's college component..he's not afraid of size...doesn't want a college the size of his High School,LOL and wants the big time sports and activities associated with a large place.U Miami is probably the smallest size college he's applying too!
He's gone to summer programs on very large campuses (Penn state) and his sister graduated from a very large U so there's no fright of size here!

fyi...my d just received an email which has a link to their on line application.....
