That would be admitted students, not the students accepting a spot.

That what was said hoo...admitted students.

These stats will not hold up for enrolled students come May 1 or June 15 or September 1. American has an incredibly low yield loosing top admits to stronger programs at other urban universities especially those in DC. Unfortunately, American also has trouble competing against its "peer" institutions who statistically enroll more of the cross admits, ie. Northeastern, Boston U, Fordham, Syracuse.

My D is a junior this year and we went to visit American U. in March. My D really loved the school and its location - and she may be majoring in education. Does anyone know what her chances would be for getting accepted? Her stats in a Philadelphia public school (ave. SAT is 1000) is: approx. 94 unweighted GPA (taking AP and advanced classes) will not know rank until senior year(most likely top 10%), old SAT 1100, taking new SAT in June. Thanks

its hard to say... i mean i got in w/ a 3.3 gpa & 1240 SAT score. If you flip back to past discussions on this board someone got in with an 800 (combined) SAT score.

I think that your daughter is in good shape though. I would consider this school for her like a safe match.

Thanks your encouraging response. American is either her top or next to the top pick for college. She may also be considering Muhlenberg College.

Muhlenberg has a very strange was of admitting students.
I also applied to Muhlenberg, but i got weightlisted. If she is really serious about Muhlenberg, then she should go ED, because it is much harder to get into Muhlenger rd. For example a girl in my school had 1100 SAT score 2.7 GPA, she got in to muhlenberg (she didn't have any special talents and she wasn't a legacy). TO be honest I didn't really like Muhlenberg... it didn't even come close to AU. The town is dumpy and there doesn't seem like there is a lot to do on or off campus.
The only plus i would have to say about Muhlenberg is that the food there was AMAZING!!!!! On the other hand AU's icecream bar is also pretty cool (haha this makes me sound like a complusive eater but I sware i'm not lol)
But the campus at Muhlenberg was quite beautiful (much like the typical beautiful campus that you see in the movies). Your daughter has a lot of great options. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or you want more info about schools and stuff.

Thanks for your opinion on Muhlenberg. I think my D liked the college atmosphere, the food (we've been there twice so far on tours and an open house), and the academic programs. Don't know much about Allentown weekend nightlife, but I hear they do road trips to NYC and Phila. It's relatively close to where we live (1 hour 20 minutes) which is a plus. But American is only 3 hours away, and D.C. offers a lot more I'm sure. My D also liked American a lot and the food was good in the cafeteria (we didn't sample the ice cream bar), the dorm rooms seemed really nice and there also seemed like there were many activies on campus as well. They seem to have a good education program there (5 years M.A.T.). Have you heard anything about some of the other schools she may be considering:
Goucher College (Towson, MD)
Quinnipiac U. (Hamden, CT)
Skidmore College (NY)
Syracuse U. (NY)
Clark U. (Wooster, MA)
Brandeis U (Waltham, MA)-this is a far reach, but is double legacy for D
Towson U. (safety)
Hofstra U. (safety)

Lets see... (this will be a loong post... I'm so not in the mood to study for APs...)

Quinnipiac:

QU is a WAY big safety for your D... unless she really likes it i would replace it with another school (personally i didn't like it too much because of the way the dorm rooms are set up. Like many of the dorm rooms have 3 or 4 people in one room, but it isn't like a suit, its just like one big room, which is quite annoying... plus having 4 girls, one room, and if they are all menstruating wow...) Plus there was this whole thing with Yale... and it just wasn't really the place for me... But the campus was quite nice.. yet at the same time they didn't have a pool (being a swimmer myself this was a HUGE turn off). But QU did give me a free lunch :) (again w/ the food stuff... ha-ha really i'm not 500 lbs!!)

Syracuse U
Okay so Syracuse is a horrible school. Okay so it is quite well known, and they having an amazing architecture & space program.. but its located in Syracuse. The weather there is pure crap. The tour guide said that last year it snowed like upwards of 40 inches. Coming from Westcher county NY... i was SO not into that. Plus (and what i recommend you ask at every tour and/ or every opportunity u have a chance to talk w/ a student) when I went to visit, there was a portion of time when parents and kids were separate. The kids all went into a room with SU students. One of the questions that I asked was: "what don't u like about SU" The student replied, "well this coming year SU dished out 2 million to Nike to re-do the SU logo. Turns out that the logo didn't really change, and there goes all that $$. The really bugged me because my parents are spending upwards of 40,000 per year, and SU decides to throw millions away to change the logo where they could have done something useful w/ it. Also the town of Syracuse kinda sucks and there doesn't seem like there is much to do. Plus the tour guide really sucked.

Skidmore College:

I applied as well to Skidmore. After my SAT score went up 90 pts i went to my guidance councilor and said "give me a few reaches" He gave me a list of 4 more colleges including like Connecticut college, Davidson, and skidmore. I asked him of this list, which college should I actually go to, visit, and interview at. He claimed that skidmore was the one. So i go, i really liked to school. It was beautiful and had a vast amount of minorities, and the people there seemed really chill. My interview went amazing, the interviewer seems to be really impressed with the fact that i earned the gold award in girl scouts, and he seemed impressed that was i able to get a 600 in verbal, where as I have a learning disability, and I didn't know how to read until the 4th grade. Then the rejection letter came. I was crushed. But yeah life goes on. Soon i realized that AU is really the place for me. I mean i'm REALLY not into art, music, or dance, so i would feel kinda out of place. (and my mom made me feel better by telling me that all the guys at Skidmore are most likely gay). Plus three girls fro, my school, which i can't stand are going to skidmore, so all is good.

...as for the other colleges... I really don't have much info on... I wouldn't say that Brandeis U is a big reach. I mean my gc suggested that I should look into this college, but I didn't take SATII, so that idea went down the drain.

good luck! I just can't seem to let go of his place (lol) so if you have any questions i'll be happy to help & answer them.

Thanks for all of your information about some of these schools-you have been very helpful. Maybe my daughter will skip the Syracuse tour and interview-she also doesn't like too much of the cold weather and snow. Hopefully we'll get the right mix of reaches, matches and safeties for her to apply. If you can think of anywhere else in the northeast, let me know. Good luck in the future, enjoy American U. and maybe my D. will see you in another year!

Skidmore is a pretty open atmosphere, but I can assure you that most guys on campus are NOT gay.

That's good to know, we'll most likely go to visit if my D is still intereted this summer. Thanks for the response.

omg i know that not all of the guys at skidmore are gay.... (not that I have anything against gay people). lol it's just something that i said to make myself feel better after being rejected....

....there really is no need to take things so literally! :)

I think that is what one calls "scape-goating", but don't take that too seriously.
