My son, currently a junior, is very interested in Miami Honors Program. He has great grades, excellent EC's and will do very well with recommendations and essay. He is not the best standardized test taker, however. Anybody out there admitted to any of the honors programs at Miami? If you could share your stats, it would be very helpful. Thanks!

The Honors website says that most students have between a 30-36 on the ACT and a 1320-1600 on the SAT (old scale), although the whole application is reviewed. I know students who were admitted with lower scores. If you do not get into Honors as a senior in HS, you can re-apply after your first semester if you get at least a 3.5 GPA with 15 credit hours. However, you are not guaranteed to get in even with the 3.5/15 hours.

Oxford Scholars is an automatic admit program-- top 10% class rank and 29 ACT (or 1280 SAT-- critical reading plus math).

I'm a Harrison (34 ACT/top 2% class rank), and from what I understand, students have a better chance at being admitted to Honors if they apply for the Harrison. Most Harrisons in my year had a 34-35 ACT, but there are students with 32-33 ACTs with amazing recs, ECs, and essays as well. I really think the essays are one of the most important parts of the application.

I LOVE being part of the Honors Program; there are so many benefits. I'm using my summer tuition waiver to study abroad in Germany (German is my second major), and the honors classes are usually considerably smaller (most are capped around 15-20, although some are larger). Priority registration is also great; I've never had to force-add classes.

Thanks for the input. In his first crack at the ACT, he had a comp 28, English 32, Reading 31, Science 26, Math 25, Writing 11. He plans to take it again in September to up the Math and Science scores. Any benefit to ED vs RD in terms of Honors?

I had an SAT score of 1270 and an ACT score of 28 and I was named an Oxford scholar. However, I had a great class rank and great EC's. So...I guess it's different for everyone...

I'm in University Honors with 30 ACT, SAT reading 740 math 690 writing 650. I applied for Harrison just to take a shot at it since I had the class rank and grades and sort of the scores, and it takes care of the honors app at the same time.

i am univ. honors class of '09
SAT 1430, ACT 31, HS GPA 4.35 UW 3.9, top 4% of 450

Hey guys, do you still get a honors scholarship when you enter the program as a sophomore? I have so so SATs but a bunch of ECs which I plan to continue once in Oxford.

yeah, you will maintain the scholarship if you maintain a 3.2 GPA after your first year)---i believe this number gradually increases to a 3.5 by senior year.

No, if you enter Honors as a sophomore, you do not get a scholarship.

sorry, i'm an honors student... and thought beamish meant each yr after your first year...

i'm unsure about entering after you are already enrolled but you can probably take aussies word

Crap!
now I have to find some other way to get some extra cash. bloody hell!

There are additional returning student scholarships you can apply for each year...
the deadline is around January 31st each yr

Bumping so it doesn't drop off the thread.
