What you need to look at is this: You are compared to other kids in your school who apply to UCSB. I attended a very competitive HS. 135 kids applied UCSB from my HS. The average GPA of applicants was 4.1 /SAT 2000 /ACT 29. 35 were accepted. UCSB typically accepts about 30% of applicants from my HS.

I met kids at orientation who had only taken 1 AP class and had GPAs of 3.5, But that was considered a good GPA from their school. No one from my school was accepted wih a GPA below 3.8. Find out where you stand compared to your peers who are applying. You can get the information from Naviance if your HS subscribes to the service. You can also go on to the college board website and plug your stats in for UCSB.

Take lots of APs if you can. I have 34 credits and I will be a sophmore after the first quarter. This allows you lots of opportunities to double major/not take such a heavy load/graduate on time/take classes that really interest you instead of the mandatory GED classes/ and register before freshman even though you are taking freshman classes. I got stuck with 8AM and 9:30AM classes for the first quarter. But for Q2, I will have a higher registration number due to my sophmore standing.

Also, even though the UCs only count a max number of AP classes in the GPA, you still get extra points in the admission process for all classes above the ones calculated in your GPA.
