1440 SAT, 32 ACT, 3.94 UW GPA, 1/379, in state applicant

(I actually had higher SAT and ACT scores (1470 and 35, respectively) and took the SAT IIs (800/780/750), but I didn't want to spend the extra money ($20+) of sending in those scores to Michigan.)

Hey Rage,
I also took GCSEs, but mine were IGCSEs. I haven't done great in my SATs and got like 1190. SAT2s Writing620 Math2c650 Physics640. My IGCSE Grades:
English Language - A
English Lit - B
Science Double Award - BB
ICT - C
Math - A
Add Math - B
Eco - D
Drama - A

Bottomline: I'm worried I don't have a chance..... what do you think?

i wouldn't say that you have no chance... there always is a chance... where are you applying from (which country)...

the D in eco is not going to help you... they use IGCSE's and all to calculate our High GPA's.. Michigan put a lot of emphasis on your school record.

Do you have any predicted IB/A-Level grades, those will also be factored in when they evaluate you. You also have't told me about your ec's n all... strong credentials here can offset the 1190.

Based on the stats that you have given me, i would say that it is a slight reach... however there is a guy from my school, who hase the same type of grades as you (GCSE) and got 1140 in his SAT and he got accepted... so like i said there always is a chance... jus keep ur fingers crossed and best of luck.

"Joseph Jewell, one of the Rhodes Scholar last year, is currently a graduate student in UMich Engineering School. He receives his undergraduate degree from CalTech!"

Haha, I never expected to see my name on this thread! Hey everyone, you should definitely go to Michigan, unless of course you pick Caltech instead (in which case, obviously, you should still root for the Michigan football team).

Although I didn't go to U-M undergrad myself, for a Michigander and lifelong Wolverine-at-heart like myself, spending a year in Ann Arbor has been like taking an extended pilgrimage to the holy city.

Joe, I was surprised to hear that a graduate student was made a Rhodes scholar. I was under the impression it was an award given out to undergraduate students. Congratulations.

Have you had the opportunity to meet Gabriel Rebeiz? I realize you are not in the same field, but he is a fascinating individual...and a fellow CalTech alum!

The rules are that you have to be under 24 and have (or will have at the end of the year) a bachelor's degree from a US school. Having already graduated doesn't disqualify you as long as you aren't in grad school at a UK school (if you have any degree at all from a UK school, you can't apply). Of the 32 people picked this year, 8 of them already had BAs or BSs and it actually gets more common every year.

Most people do apply through their undergrad schools even if they have already graduated, which is what I did, since I'd been at Michigan for exactly one month at the time of my application. (However, I don't really mind if Michigan "claims" me too, as they seem to have done, because I do support and like the school.)

I haven't met Gabriel Rebeisz... 4 of the profs in my department are Caltech alums, though, so I'm not currently lacking for fellow Techers.
