I was wondering if you, that have been offered an appt., could be so kind as to list your academic stats and what you feel may have put you over the top. I am asking not to pry, just sincerely interested.

Thanks

which weekend were you?

I would expect a Math SAT of 780 would receive an automatic LOA. Congratulations!

socal....don't try and second guess the Admissions Board. Yeah, our Plebe had a 790 Math SAT and got an LOA....but you can't count on that as a reliable test for 'automatic' when it comes to the vagaries of USNA Admissions.

peskemom is right- nothing is ever a "given" with this process....

again I will post, for what I think is the umteenth time....if you are focusing on what others have, you are focusing on the wrong thing.

The focus should be on what YOU bring to the table, not what others have. There is no magic formula- and trying to figure it out is an exercise in futility. This process is not in your control with the exception of your grades and qualities that are in YOUR folder..... are you focused on getting the best SATs YOU can get? Then what does it matter what joe door gets? Are to looking to just be "good enough" as the next guy, or are you tying to give this your absolute all? You can bet the kids that are hungry enough for this are going to make themselves as competetive as they possibly can!

One last thought-
looking at stats can give you a range of who gets in- but there are lots of exceptions, on both ends of the scale. Lots of 700+ SATs will get passed over for a 600.....if the 600 has a better "whole person" score. Remember, the USNA is looking for MORE than just pure academics....they want to see leadership, motivation, desire, determination, athleteticism, physical fitness, etc.....those things count- a lot!

Best of luck!

^^^^^
Ditto navy2010 and peskemom.

Somewhere there is a percentage breakdown that I've seen or was told. SAT math 30%, SAT R 15%, EC's 10%? GPA()%..Sports()% Something like that.

I think I also heard that numerical value is given as well to these categories so the candidate ends up w/ cumulative number and a threshold to surpass.

Numbers are important, but they aren't everything. As a BGO, I once had a candidate with 790/800 SATs. Played sports. Did community activities. Was a total loser. He didn't get a nom or an appointment -- not surprisingly.

Every year, USNA publishes the stats for the entering class. Things like average SATs/ACTs, percentage of incoming plebes who were varsity athletes, Eagle Scouts, etc. That is a pretty good guide to the numbers. But, as everyone has said, there are many variables. And, it's not just getting the nod from USNA -- you also need a nomination. And competition for that can vary based on your geographic location.

Do your very best, complete your application and nom packets as quickly as possible, and see what happens.

Captain of Football team, lettered varsity all 4 years
MVP of track team lettered 2 years
AP Calculus
AP Environmental Science
AP Psychology
everything else was mostly honors..

For the GPA, although I know mine is very low compared to other candidates, it helps so much to take honors classes and get a lower grade than to take the easy classes and ace them.

I am not appointed yet, but I have everything passed and one of the recruiters will be putting my profile infront of the board in a couple weeks. Hope all goes well.

Also, I agree with USNA1985 as to filling out the application and nom packets as quickly as possible, but also give yourself a lot of time. I had to do mine within a month... very poor choice on my part.
