Stats or AP psych?

Hi folks:

My son is a rising senior who is wrestling with whether to take statistics this fall. If so, it would need to replace AP psych, which we know he would excel at. He knows some colleges frown if you don't attack a fourth year of math. Other perhaps relevant facts: He just completed pre-calc, but wouldn't qualify for calc because the level he took was too low (even though his average was an A); he wants to be a history major, something he excels at (5 in AP History); signed up for AP US Gov, English, and French, along w/regular-leveled Physics. Current weighted GPA is about 3.8. His guidance counselor gave a very ambiguous answer to this question, so advice is appreciated, thanks!

Take both. They’re easy.

Take Stats in class and self-study Psych since you did say that AP Psych “we know he would excel at”.

Self studying is definitely a viable option. Or take the class at a local community college (which is what I did for most Stats and Psych since my school didn’t really offer either). I then self studied for the AP exams.

Is there any way he could take calculus at a community college? The general consensus around here seems to be that even moderately selective colleges far prefer calculus on a transcript to statistics, in the same way they prefer to see physics over an easier elective science.
