stats

hey :) if i get into usc i would be class of 2011. but i was wondering, for the people who got in this year (class of 2010) what are you stats? just want to see if i stand a chance =X

School: Cinema-Television, Critical Studies
SAT: 1960; M-670 V-680 W-590 (not so good, I know. Probably why I didn't get any scholarships.)
GPA: 4.22w
Top 5% of class
Class Rank: 12
Usually all A's in classes, took 2 AP's (Eng. + Calc AB) last year, 2 this year (Eng. Lit + Calc BC)
Awards: National Honor Society, Eagle Scout, National Commended Student (PSAT), Presidential Scholar.
EC's: Varsity Soccer (Captain), Varsity Lacrosse, Track and Field, Jazz Ensemble, Concert Band, Math Team (only one year for credit), Junior Director's Guild.
Community Service: Ok, but not over and above (Eagle Scout made up for most of that.)
Great Teacher Rec's and Good (I think) Essays.

Well, that's about all I can think of right now, but feel free to ask me any more questions about other areas that I forgot.

I got a trustee scholarship, so my stats probably aren't accurate for university admission in general and wouldn't really help you. I did hear that this year the average GPA for admitted students was around 4.0 (not sure how they weight this, but I'm pretty sure they don't mean all-A's) and average SAT was 2000-2200.

college admission really is a tough game @ this point. i had a 3.84, and i got into USC @ a spring admit. other ppl with 3.8's probably got in as fall admits. what you really want to have to reinforce your extracurriculars and essay are good grades and good test scores. if you're test scores are about 2100 and up, you're fine. also, apply as early as possible if you want to get in, the earlier you apply, the more spots there are.

my biggest downfall is my gpa its about a 3.7 weighted i have good reccomendations lined up and my sat scores will be between 2000 and 2100 i hope. i have extra curricluars and comm service hours and im alumni. but im still just worried about my gpa

I'm sure essays are the deciding factor, seeing as comparing stats and the decisions seem random sometime-- just do your best on your essays for your match and reach schools.
The difference in essay quality is why you see people with a 3.9 get rejected/waitlisted, while someone with a 3.4 and a stellar essay gets admitted.

Admitted Fall 2006 to the Engineering School
SAT: 2040 (760M, 610CR, 670W)
ACT: 33
AP Courses: Calculus BC 5, Statistics 4, Language 3
Senior Year: AP Literature, AP Physics B, AP Environmental Science, AP Spanish Language, Calculus 3 and MultiVariable Functions, Differential Equations, Honors Consumer Economics
GPA: 3.7UW, 4.1W
Extracurricular Activities: Varsity Softball, Church Youth Group, Math Team, FIRST Robotics

I had lower SATs than most people, but I think my strength in math made up for it. My essays were weak, but my letters of recommendation were strong.

Does your GPA show improvement over the years? Mine was a 3.7W GPA my freshman year, but I ended up pulling off a 4.4W GPA last year, giving me a 4.1W GPA overall. I think my improvement over the years helped me gain admission.

at the end of junior year my gpa would most likely be a 3.7 or 3.8w. would they consider my senior year grades? im going to take ap physics, ap gov/econ, ap calc ab, and ap english

first semester matters alot...and so does second semester, but in the second semester, all you have to do is keep your grades up and adequate

when i apply do i send my application before or after the first semester of senior year ended?

it depends on when grades come out @ your school. most people send in their applications before, and have their school mail the trancsripts later (around january) when they're availible.

Try to show an upward trend. I got in with a 3.3 uw gpa but my grades went up and up each year and my first term senior grades were fye (I also go to a incredibly hard private school that USC happens to like). My SAT's were also pretty good. Write good essays, schedule an interview, visit the campus, and do everything like that if you are serious about it, they definitely take that stuff into consideration. If your stressed about it now its only gonna get worse, try not to worry about it, you'll have plenty of time for that once your apps have been sent away.

Great Teacher Rec and essays must have been good enough I guess.

I got no scholarships (My University Grant is basically one though, almost 35 grand a year, and I can't lose that by flunking a test), but I did get into Rusch Engineering Honors.

thanks :) if i get everything else pretty high i hope i have a good shot of getting in. congratulations to all of you :) usc is the best school everrr

This may sound cheesy USC really likes to see interdisciplinary thought even at the high school level; it shows that you're well-rounded and are probably interested in USC's different schools. A lot of people do community service, tutor kids after school, edit the newspaper, play sports, etc. It really helps if you do some slightly unusual activity that you're really dedicated to no matter how nerdy it may seem.

Lindsay2259, it's nice to see another FIRST participant here. USC really seems to like FIRST; I've heard that Viterbi offers scholarships to some FIRST participants.

Admitted: Fall '06
School: Cinema-Television, Writing for Screen and TV
SAT: 2110 (750 W, 720 V, 640 M)
SAT IIs: 770 Writing, 720 Lit, 700 US History, 670 Bio
GPA: 4.0
Academic Junk: lots of honors and AP classes (AP Music Theory, AP Language and AP Lit, APUSH, physics honors, math honors, etc.); never had an off period because I took a full schedule every year
Awards: National Merit Commended (i would have been a semifinalist, but you had to be in the 98.9% or higher, and i was in 98.8% :(
EC's: Yearbook (10, 11, 12; editor for two years), jazz band, newspaper, Lit Mag editor, NHS, CSF, musical orchestra member, lots of piano lessons
Community Service: tutored inner city kids
Rec's: well, i had to get 4 for CNTV, and i suppose they were good :)

I don't think i'm a good indication, though, since I was admitted into a portfolio-driven major; i believe if i applied to CAS, I would not have gotten into USC. My WST portfolio was---in my opinon---amazing, and possibly the reason I was admitted.

Zelda
-You first have to be accepted to USC general studies before they even look at you for CNTV. At least that's what their booklet says.
