Status Page changed college and major!!

I just checked son's status page. He originally applied to the college of engineering, for biomedical engineering. It now says college of LAS, chemical bioengineering.

Does this mean he was probably admitted to an alternate program? However, son would prefer to have been admitted to an alternate program within the college of engineering...he's not interested in chem E as he is in the other engineering majors. Has this happened to anyone else?

BTW, his stats: GPA unweighted 3.8
GPa Weighted 5.114
Rank 8/901
ACT 36
SAT 1600/2310
National Merit Semifinalist
Decent EC's

Thanks for any advice/input. He is in-state Illinois.

call call call. Even if he was rejected from his first choice (which I'm not saying he was) they wouldn't randomly assign him into chem eng if he didn't want it- they would put him in general engineering, LAS, or DGS.

Your post is unclear. You say he applied for college of engineering "for biomedical engineering." There is no biomedical engineering major that he could have marked on the application. There is either "bioengineering" (application code KV04085) which is in the college of engineering or "Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering" (code KV03005) which is in LAS college. Which code did he actually put on the application?

If he put "bioengineering," which is the hardest to be admitted to, then he was supposed to answer the question that specifically asked what other engineering major he wanted to be considered for as a second choice to bioengineering. If that happened, what did he put as the answer? If he put bioengineering as his first choice then he is now being considered for another choice, meaning he has not been accepted to bioengineering. If he failed to answer the second choice question, they are simply assuming he would want to be considered for chemical and biomolecular. If he gave an answer other than chemical and biomolecular as second choice, then one of two things have occurred: (a) someone missed what his second choice was, or (b) he has also not been accepted for second choice and they are actually onto a third option.

If he chose "Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering" he is being considered for exactly what he asked to be considered for. That major is in LAS although for all intents and purposes it follows the college of engineering (and is considered an engineering degree program; this is a quirk of history, when chemical engineering was added as a major over 100 years ago there were no labs for such a major in the engineering college so it was put in the chemistry dept and has remained there since although it is really engineering and follows the college of engineering requirements).

That is a comprehensive response from drusba (Thanks, Drusba). Question for d101parent: is this change of status recent? If so, this week they must be uploading decisions, with the only thing suppressed being decision status line. I do remember the college rep lady saying there bioeng is impacted (really small capacity that they cannot grow).

Also, in checking the code on the app I mistakenly typed a 5 instead of an S, the codes are KV0408S for bionegineering and KV0300S for Chemical and Biomolecular engineering.

Oh my gosh....I know he put in bioengineering for his choice in the college of engineering, because I checked the on-line status page after applying, but I have no recollection of a second choice major.....He either left it blank, or just reiterated the same major, I am thinking. Is there a way to see the application on-line after it is submitted? He did not print a hard copy.

Unfortunately, I think you needed to print out the pages as you went along to be able to save anything. Bioengineeering would be something specifically selected from a given list for first choice. On the on-line app, the second choice if you applied bioengioneering was just a box in which you would type in the name of a major. It is possible that he typed nothing or put in something not specifically recognized like "biomedical engineering" which they would have construed as chemical and biomolecular. This appears to be something you will need to call about to see what actually happened. And when I say "you" I mean your son because they most likely will not make any changes if you ask or answer your questions as to what was actually on the app since he is the applicant and the only one they will talk to about such things.

OK, he got home from work, and I was able to explain what I know. He told me he put down bioengineering as his first choice, and "engineering, undecided" as his second choice. So it appears that admissions took an educated guess. However, son definitely doesn't want chemical, and would take any other concentration within the school of engineering except computer(interests are physics, mechanical, aeronautical to name a few). So hopefully admissions can work with him to resolve this. Maybe worst case scenario, they can delete his application and he can reapply for regular admission. Thanks so much drusda.

i assume college of engineering is full, so they put him in his second choice. u shud definitely call, im not going if i got accepted into any of college than college of business.

I talked to admissions today....I'm happy to report the lady I talked to was wonderful...I was concerned about a lot of red tape in such a big institutions, but that was not the case, and her return phone calls to me came within 5 minutes.

It turns out the drusda is absolutely right...the school made an assumption as to what his second choice was, which was not accurate, based on my son's vague second choice response. He is still being considered for his first choice...we do not yet know if he will get it, but they are accepting another second choice for him. But, as drusda already stated, my son has to call and talk to them to give them his second choice.

Thanks to all who helped.
