Should I stay at a CC in hopes of transferring to a more ranked UC (UCLA or UCB) or should I transfer to UCR?

DETAILS
I have already been accepted to UCR.
3.675 gpa
Completed the TAP requirements (scholars program)
but I will only have around 57 units by the end of spring (need 60 for UC Transfer)
Sociology major

I did 3 years at a community college due to not being able to get classes the first year, along with a few remedial math and English classes. A lot of people take 3 years, so it really depends on what you want.

dont you need a minimum of 60 units to be considered for admission? anyway i stayed 3 years as well, and got into my first choice school with the major i wanted. yes, it sucked knowing many of my friends transfered in 2 years, but it was worth in the end.

in your situation, yes i would stay at your CC. as long as you keep your TAP valid, you should have no problem with UCLA next year. keep your GPA up and continue taking any recommended classes there might be for your major.

It depends on how much you want to go to the higher ranked schools. Don’t go just for the ranking, go if that is what you have your heart set on. As for units, you wont be able to transfer if you don’t have the units though. So unless you can somehow get those last three, you have another year at CC.

Wow I did not know that they didn’t require 60 units. I am almost positive UCI does though…weird.

UCR is mostly hated because of its location, which is bizarre to me. The city of Riverside isn’t exactly my top choice to live in, but it is near the beach, mountains, desert and about an hour from LA and an hour and a half from San Diego. I don’t get what is so bad about that. Plus the campus is nice and the professors are awesome.

@rca2446: No, I got into UCR last year along with UCI, went to UCI for a quarter, dropped out (this was pre-planned, it wasn’t a grades issue) and am now going to UCSD this fall.

With that GPA and TAP completed, you would be well-served to wait it out until next year and apply to UCLA/UCB/UCSD. At the very least you qualify for UCSD TAG.

@Grimes99, Cool congrats on UCSD! And you are probably right. thanks!

@natjan, even UCI accepts sophomore applicants, but they are realllllyyyy selective!
And i totally agree w/ you. i visited ucr, beautiful campus, and not so big that you feel overwhelmed. But i must say, the best thing about riverside is probably UC Riverside Lol, the rest of the city is laggin’. But the professors are really cool, especially in the sociology department, which is my major. i especially like that ucr is so diverse!

if you like ucr, then go to ucr! if you are going for prestige, get good grades at riverside and apply to ucla/ucb for grad school. dont waste another year at CC.

I’ll take the other side of the argument. Community College is CHEAP. If you can handle a little more time at the community college, you’ll come out many $$$ ahead. I’m not saying avoid Riverside at all, I’m saying don’t spend a penny more on your education than you have to.

@Lizfromhollywood Great point! I can definitely attain the prestige by going to a top school for grad school! never thought about that

@hesdjjim: Also, a very logical point. I will save tons at a CC, however, i will kind of be wasting time as i only need 3 more units, and any additional classes wont relate to my major. but I totally agree, CC is a hugeee money saver, plus the professors are super chill and I can possibly work more and apply for more scholarships saving some money for those top schools.

decisions decisionss. I even heard back from another school today, it’s a private, so my units did not matter.
