Hey, everyone! Here's my issue: I just got accepted to the University of Florida, which is my dream school, Penn State UP, and FSU Honors to name a few. All of those Universities interest me A LOT, and I would love to call myself a baby gator, nittany lion, or seminole, but I would rather not spend upwards of 40K per year. Going to a SUNY school would be the best choice for me financially (I'm a NY resident), but I would much rather be somewhere with as much energy and spirit as the OOS schools I mentioned.

Question: Is it worth going to any of the schools I mentioned OOS?

P.S. I received a scholarship of $7,222 from FSU, which would make it somewhat more affordable.

It would be really helpful to know what you will PAY at the SUNY schools (and the other three) and if any of them are close enough to home that you would consider commuting. Do you know how to run the net price calculator for each school?

Thanks for replying so fast, jkeil! I would pay about 20k per year for the SUNY schools (they all have different tuitions, but all together, they would be only a few thousand dollars off). I also would live on campus. For FSU, it would be about $27k per year with the scholarship and $24k if I spent my first year abroad. UF would definitely be a splurge with its cost of $37k per year. My family doesn’t qualify for need-based financial aid.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that Penn State would be about $40k per year!

My parents are willing to spend about $20,000 per year. My sister will start college in a couple of years, so I don’t want to put too much of a strain on my parents financially. Thanks for the replies so far!!

I totally would, SurvivorFan, but I’m not sure if I want to spend my freshman year abroad haha. If I spent my first year in Tallahassee, I would spend 7K extra each year. Thanks for the reply!

Why does spending your freshman year abroad have any bearing on the other three years? Anyway, living abroad could be an interesting experience, while you would still get three years at FSU (assuming he stays two more years, as he says, you would still get to watch Jameis Winston lead the football team for a year).

I was super excited to hear back from the FYA program, but doesn’t everyone meet their friends freshman year? I know I’d still have 3 more years at FSU, but it would be nice to meet some people and get used to college before studying abroad haha. I’ll definitely think about what you said! Thanks!

First, what SUNY schools are you considering? And second, you really need to talk to your parents and see if they are willing to spend the extra money for FSU.

The FYA is a very good deal since on top of spending a year abroad which is a fantastic experience, you’ll be assessed instate tuition for the remaining 3 to 4 years of your undergraduate degree at FSU! With one year at 24k and three years at in-state public tuition, FSU becomes as affordable over 4 years as a SUNY. (Make the calculation.)
In addition, you’ll make friends on the program - all the freshmen admitted with you will share very strong bonds since you’ll have to learn how to adapt while abroad. :)

Happy1: I was considering Binghamton, Oneonta, and New Paltz. Oneonta would be the least expensive choice because I got a scholarship. I think my parents are ok with my going to FSU, but I would need to take the flights into consideration. Also, my mom isn’t sold on the idea of me spending my first year abroad haha.

MYOS1634: That’s what I thought!! Did you participate in it, or do you know someone who studied abroad? How do students transition to the campus in Tallahassee? :)

twoinanddone, the $24k is an average of all four years! I would pay $40k for the first year and instate tuition ($19k) for the next three years.

I’m just not sure if FSU is worth the extra money if I don’t want to spend my first year abroad (it would be about $27k per year if I didn’t). I also don’t know if any of the other OOS schools I mentioned are worth OOS tuition. Thank you, everyone!

I thought you meant $40,000 - Honors scholarships = $24,000 + instate tuition for 3 years… that made a choice easy.
FYA does deduct any financial aid you receive.
Is your $7,700 scholarship to be deducted from in-state tuition each year after FYA? Or is it the total of the amount? If you got into Honors College, can you expect another scholarship?

No, the other OOS schools aren’t worth the price premium (unless your family has $100,000 in a bank account dedicated to your education). There’s no HUGE difference between them that would justify paying the difference.

MYOS1634: Haha I got a $7,222 scholarship, but that’s only if I don’t participate in the FYA program, making it about $27K per year. If I do spend my first year abroad, it’ll be about $24K per year. I don’t think I’ll get another scholarship- I think it’s just the 7K per year. Thanks for your thoughts- I’ll take them into consideration! Maybe UF and Penn State aren’t worth their crazy prices.

No, UF and Penn State definitely aren’t worth the crazy prices.
Call FSU and ask them whether the $7,000 scholarship still applies if you do FYA. It’s worth a shot.
how would you finance the 40k that first year, keeping in mind you can only borrow $5,500?

Thank you! I’ll do that tomorrow. My parents are willing to help me out with the $40K because they know that the next three years will only be $19K Random question, but do you know anyone who went to FSU?

Did I miss something in the posts? What makes you think you’ll be considered in-state after your freshman year? Public Us don’t tend to do that because they lose money. State laws usually don’t allow that because the Us are funded by in-state taxes.
