Hey guys! so i will go to college in la or nyc.
I was wondering HOW MUCH of the tuition is housing? I mean... In the website it says 37,000 dollars but is it with housing or without?
if i rent an apartment somewhere would it be cheaper?

Tuition is tuition, ie. actual educational instruction and resources. It does not include housing. I don’t know how expensive apartments are in LA or NYC.

Housing is usually listed as room and board. The “board” part is the meal plan.

It is a great idea to live in the dorm at least for freshman year, you will make a lot more friends that way.

Tuition charges don’t include housing…that’s room and board, as stated above.

Depending on the price of whatever university’s housing this is versus the price of apartments in the city you’re in, I would think an apartment would be more expensive.

Dorms are often similar to the price of an apartment. The housing division will try to make it seem like it’s cheaper, but with a meal plan or whatever it’s often a little more expensive. However, since you will be in NYC/LA I am not sure, dorms could be cheaper since apartments there are often extremely expensive. I think you’re going to have to do some research to decide.

The prices end up being very similar if you take into account the fact that: you’ll have to fully furnish+maintain your apartment and find your own food whereas in a dorm, you’ve got meal plans and no-need for a ton of furniture. Plus, dorms are fantastic places for meeting people and making friends. I’d highly recommend dorming.

I personally think dorming is great for one or maybe two years, but after that a lot of people feel they’ve outgrown that environment and are ready to strike out on their own. It’s a nice place to meet people, but after a year you’re sick of all the supervision. However in a big city I think a dorm would be easier to get than an apartment, NY/LA are notorious for crappy, expensive housing.
