staying in dorms over breaks

what if i just stayed? if i have a key can't i get in? would they do anything?
i don't want to have to travel all the back to my hometown when santa barbara is so damn great!

long weekends you can stay like normal.

certain holidays you can stay for a price (why would you? it gets very lonely).
you get special key and terms/conditions (also, NO MEALS, i think)

other times you HAVE to leave.

You can only stay over Thanksgiving break for a fee. (I think it was $161.40 last year)
UCEN and most of the places in IV will probably be closed.

You will have to leave for winter and spring break.

it sucks when they don’t let you stay during breaks even though you pay the same full price every month (or quarter). they change the locks during breaks so you can’t enter the building with the key that you have.

I was wondering the same for university apartments because I think somebody will take over my room at my house. And, I could always drive home and come back if I want to spend time with the family during breaks since its only 1 hour 30 minutes away from Santa Barbara. Is it the same for university apartments as dorms?

I don’t think its fair that I sign a contract for over nine months and pay and I can’t even stay for the months I paid for.

For winter breaks, my belongings could be left there, right? I don’t have to repack?

I found this on the contract for residence halls:

During academic breaks students may not remain in the Residence Halls.
The students are not charged for these days. The total billable days
reflect these breaks.

Days that are not billed in this cycle are:
November 26, 2009 – November 28, 2009…Thanksgiving Break
December 13, 2009 – January 3, 2010…Winter Break
March 21, 2010 – March 28, 2010…Spring Break

Students are allowed to stay in the Residence Halls over Thanksgiving
Break, at an additional charge. These days are not included in the
2009–2010 billable days cycle. Arrangements to stay must be made with
the Resident Director of the Student’s hall. During Thanksgiving Break
the dining commons are not open, so Students who stay will need to dine
out. During Winter and Spring Breaks Students may not stay over.

But, I don’t remember reading that in my university apartment contract.

Look at the contract. I don’t know if yours is the same as the dorm one but mine says this:

"a. The term of this Contract shall be for the entire 2009–2010 Academic Year commencing with the 2009 Fall Quarter and ending at the expiration of the 2010 Spring
Quarter, as specified in the Schedule of Rates & Calendar for Residence Halls, Part II of contract. The specific dates when the residence halls open and close each
quarter are indicated in the Schedule of Rates & Calendar, Part II. The residence halls will be closed during the Thanksgiving holiday and between quarters.
"

Dissonance, are you replying to me or the original poster?

That is not listed on my contract for Santa Ynez Apartment. I only found this relating to this:
I guess 2B answers my question and maybe 2C

"2. TERM:
a. The term of this contract shall be Saturday, September 19, 2009 to Monday, June 14, 2010.
**b. Residents who check-in or check-out during the first or last week of any quarter will be charged for that entire week in their prorated rent.
*c. Resident may be required to vacate the apartment within twenty-four (24) hours or less after completing their last final examination if disruptive to the community. In no case does the 24 hours extend beyond the official apartment closure.

TERMINATION:
d. Contract termination, release and vacating dates are determined by the University (Undergraduate Apartments, Apartment Assignment Services) after completion and approval of a contract cancellation form.

CERTIFICATION: This Contract consists of Part I (Contract), Part II (Terms and Conditions), Schedule of Rates and the 2009-2010 Undergraduate Apartments Handbook all of which are incorporated into and made part of this Contract…"
