Staying over breaks

If I decide to go to Yale, I would only be able to go home twice a year, as I have limited financial resources and live in California. I would then have to stay over such breaks as Thanksgiving break and Easter break, going home only when the dorms close for winter and summer break.

Are there other people who stay in the dorms over breaks? For those of you who do, is it a negative experience? Should this sway me to go to Stanford, where I can just take a 45 minute drive home for breaks?

Thanks.

bump bump bump

You need to find out whether the Yale dorms even stay open during the short breaks. At some colleges, the dorms do; at others, they don't.

Many schools do not allow the option of staying in the dorm during breaks. My son from CA is in school in Boston. He has spent Thanksgiving and Christmas with other families of kids on his hall. Generally speaking, I've found that if you are at all social and friendly, you will be able to find some friends and they are pretty open about inviting kids from CA home for the holidays.
Trust that it will work out if your heart is set on Yale.

My S is in that situation (only coming home for Christmas and summer) at a CA school. He was invited to a professor's house along with other stray students (about 1/4 of the school stayed for Thanksgiving and Easter). He enjoyed it, saved $, and avoided the trouble of traveling.

A nephew--midwesterner at an east coast school--didn't plan to go home for Easter, then found out his campus would be closed. He ended up meeting a relative in a nearby city.

Something will work out.

Again, you need to check the policies of each individual school. Often the dorms are open but without food service.

I looked at the Yale schedule, and they only mentioned that the dorms will close during winter and summer breaks, so I'm assuming they stay open the other breaks.
