Steinhardt NYU Jazz

Are there still applicants who haven't heard back from the jazz program regarding their prescreen DVD's?

Yes, S is still waiting to hear from NYU for jazz guitar.
We got confirmation from the university that his file was complete but nothing yet from Steinhardt.

We also got the confirmation that my S's file was complete, but have heard nothing else. I feel better knowing that we're not alone. Thanks!

My son has not heard so I called there and after much hassle of finding a live person to respond was told that they do not notify those who did not pass the prescreen. Those who passed were notified already. I asked them to look specifically at my son's app and the next day he got a standard rejection e-mail: "Dear Applicant, you were not selected...."

Yuck, that's cold.

That is nasty. But I guess I'd rather know for sure than be left up in the air.

I am so ticked off! The NYU jazz department is so poorly run. They changed their pre-screen requirements in the fall after S had tailored everything to their initial list, then they changed the due date from Dec. 1 to Jan 1 after he scrambled to get it in on time. It's impossible to reach them on the phone or via email, and then they don't have the courtesy to contact those whom they aren't considering. This is what happens when you don't have real administrators running things.

I have heard from the mom of a former jazz student (05) that the jazz department is in disarray--a well-meaning director though. And it tends toward the academic, which is not usually what a jazz musician is looking for. It's odd when they have other very top notch music departments: Tisch for musical theatre and Music Business in Steinhardt--one of the best. This girl left early, wishing she had gone to a conservatory instead.

Seems to me that if this is how they treat you when they are "wooing" you it can only go down from there! Where else are your kids applying?

I always hold back from saying anything negative when it's not my own experience, so I feel very guilty for posting about NYU jazz! NYU itself is a very hot school, and I know that many students are dying to get in there. The general education is great of course. I wouldn't take sloppy admissions offices as a sign of a bad educational experience. Purchase was very much like that when my son applied last year--disorganized and curt on the phone. But, it's a great conservatory.

ZappaMom--we were applying last year, but just fyi, the schools were:

UMass Amherst
Manhattan School of Music
Hartt
New England Conservatory
Purchase
The New School for Jazz

Ah; I was hoping we might meet at an audition or two. I'm glad your son's experience hasn't been negatively affected by the less-than-optimal application experience. I'm sure the folks who work at these places dread the app season, even if it's their raison d-etre!

Just an update. S finally heard from NYU on the prescreen. He has an audition March 5.
Thats a little challenging- we have to get to NYC from Boston for a Thursday audition, return home and then fly to Dallas on Friday for a Saturday audition there.

For ZappaMom:
S is in at Berklee- I hear yours is too- congrats!
Has auditions at UMass
NEC
UNT
UNF
NYU
Went to USC for an audition in Jan.
Busy times! Good luck to all in the coming weeks.

Congrats to your son, jazzguitarmom! Good luck on all those trips (and flying with the guitar ... don't expect to carry it on). We were at UNT a few weeks back. Great experience, although the weather was blustery and cold!

Good luck guitarists! Hard to believe I was in your shoes a year ago. You, too, will survive and live to tell the tale. Jazzguitarmom, if you have any questions about NEC, feel free to pm me.

has anyone heard from Steinhardt re admissions decisions? Do you know when those come out? I know people are getting letters from NYU already but not sure about Steinhardt.

---jazzieMG--- I was wondering the same thing. My S had his Steinhardt audition (jazz guitar) on 3/6, and hasn't heard back yet. I think he was told they'd hear by the end of the March. We're also waiting on USC's Thornton Studio/Jazz Guitar while I understand that the Popular Music applicants have already gotten word.

my brother got his acceptance from nyu steinhardt either this past friday or saturday. he auditioned on the 3rd, and we live in ct. i believe if you passed the prescreen and were invited to audition, most students are accepted. best of luck!

My son just heardt from Steinhardt (yes), no reply from USC studio'jazz guitar yet.

Oh, and did anyone on this thread audition at the New School? Any news from there?

@jazzieMG. My son auditioned for The New School but hasn't heard from back yet. Congrats on the Steinhardt news and good luck on the Jazz program. Didn't you post earlier in this thread that you had contacted them and your son didn't get asked back for a live audition?
