Steinhardt Studio Art / Other Specialty Schools

Hello, just a few questions, any advice would be greatly appreciated:

How much does a summer program really effect admission? I’m taking a studio art class at Steinhardt this summer and how should I make the best of it in terms of like eventual admission to the school? (Sounds kind of heartless, I know, and I didn’t at all consider the program for this reason, but people tell me it can be important.

How little do these schools (Tisch, Galatin, Steinhardt[Art/Music]) really focus upon traditional academic qualifications? I’ve got a strong GPA, but my test scores aren’t too hot.

Any Steinhardt Studio Art memebers, what’s the dynamic of the school truly like? (I.e. will classes totally be limited to the study of art, or will one also be able to pursue a more liberal arts education).

Also, how difficult is it to get accepted into Steinhardt? What are the logistics of the portfolio and like how “great” must it be?

Welll thanks so much,
Jake’s Dad

Hiya! I was recently accepted into the Studio Art program at Steinhardt for class of 2011. So I can answer some of your questions

I actually have no experience in this whatsoever. But, I would think if you do well in the Studio Art class this summer, you would establish good relations with the professors and definitely give you an upper hand when it comes to admissions.

I would say academics weighs a lot along with your portfolio, resume, recommendation and essay. Of course, you'd have to be qualified for the university g.p.a/sat score wise. I would recommend doing well on the SATS [You don't have to do AMAZING, just the school average I guess]. Definitely though, your portfolio/artwork is going to count for the majority of your admission to the art program.

As for classes, from what I know, a little more than half of your credits will be in studio art, some in art history, some in MAP courses, and the rest in electives. I could be wrong though, I still have to attend the orientation.

I don't really know about the difficulty of Steinhardt studio art. I know they accept around 50-60 kids each year and there are about 200 kids in the program in total. I think I read somewhere that this year they screened about 300 portfolios before they chose their class. Maybe there were more applicants, but they screened a limited amount. As for the portfolio review, I think they like variety in their classes. I've seen very very meticulous portfolios, with realistic renderings and self portraits. I've also seen conceptual portfolios filled with flowing ideas and expression. Then there are portfolios based on installations and sculptures and gigantic murals. They all got in, and all wonderful in their own right. You just have to catch their eye I think. There is definitely no formula for the perfect NYU portfolio.

Hope I helped, I'm sure people who are in the program now could help you more!
