Does anyone have any experience with NYU's 3-week musical theatre program--the one that is run through Steinhardt? I would like to know about the quality of instruction, classes offered and social aspects/ dorming. Thanks!!

hmmm...I'm sad nobody has replied!

Anyone know anything about the summer musical theatre program at Steinhardt (NYU)? How about the one-week program for the Steinhardt Music Business program?

Thanks!!!

I have a friend who did the Steinhardt MT program. She loved it.
Be warned, it is VERY vocal intense. While there is still acting and dancing, I believe what happens is that you come in with three songs (one for each week) and each week is devoted to a different song. Then, at the end of the three weeks, a showcase is put on. She did learn a lot though.
That's about all I know. If you have specific questions, I can probably ask her and find out for you.

My D's voice teacher really likes Steinhardt as a place for MT performers to go to college. I would guess she would also recommend the summer program. Their main focus is, of course, singing, whereas the Tisch/CAP21 summer program's focus is acting, singing and dancing.

uskoolfish, did you see this thread from the list of schools above?

Perhaps you could contact one of those posters for their opinions.

NotMamaRose- What is it your D's voice teacher likes the most about Steinhardt for MT? My S is auditioning at Steinhardt on 2/10 (for the BM program in MT, not the summer program) but he is hesitant about future casting prospects- we haven't seen very many/any Steinhardt grads on our many Playbills. Also, he is a dancer and is wondering how hard it is to take additional dance outside the school, or even outside NYU. Can you shed any light on this? Thanks-

BreatheEasy, I haven't discussed this issue at length with my D's voice teacher (a Juilliard alumna who headed up one of the voice depts at Peabody Conservatory for a number of years), mostly because my D is only a junior in high school. But just this past Saturday, after my D's lesson, we were discussing college stuff briefly and she said how impressed she is with the vocal training at Steindhardt. I will talk to her more about this and report back, if you like. Also, my D was just part of a program (thru her school) in which she and several other kids attended rehearsals for a musical at one of our Equity theaters, and got the opportunity to get to know/chat with, etc. the cast members. One young woman was a Steindhardt alumna and strongly recommended it to my D. She did tell my D that one must supplement her dance training at Steinhardt, but, interestingly enough, this young lady had the most difficult dance part in the whole show! From the brief discussion with my D't voice teacher, I got the impression that she (the teacher) believes that, at Steinhardt, kids learn to sing properly and healthfully, and that there is not an undue emphasis on belting. I will try to ask her more this coming weekend and get back to you. Hopefully, that won't be too late. If it is, PM me and I will try to email her earlier for you.

Quick mention that I recently saw Fantastiks (off-Broadway). Recent Steinhardt grad was a lead.
Also additional dance is EASY in NYC. Lot's of wonderful open classes in a variety of studios.

Thanks for the info jasmom and NotMamaRose! Since my S is not auditioning until 2/10 (and probably won't hear or make a decision on schools until later) any further info you gather will certainly not be too late. Thanks again- I love this forum!

For what it's worth, I have heard it described (on this forum, probably) that Steinhardt is for "singers who act" and Tisch is for "actors who sing."

just FYI - I saw A Chorus Line at Steinhardt 2 years ago and the dancers were phenomenal! Also, the girl who played Cassie just got the lead role in High School Musical in Atlanta; the "world premiere professional production". Not too shabby! (and my daughter's at CAP, so I have nothing to gain by saying that!!)

My daughter was accepted into the MT program at Steinhardt for summer 07! She is very excited. Anyone else attending?

I got accepted! :) I'm a junior going to be a Senior and I have already visited in the fall. It is a really special program. I am so excited! I'm from Cali, is your daughter staying in NYU housing? Does she have a myspace?

I am attending this summer! Can't wait! :)
