Stellar? Lackluster? You Decide

Well, I'll be submitting my Penn ED app soon and working on others so I want some closure in terms of what people "think" (I know this stuff can't be definitive) about my profile and corresponding chances. Thanks!

Information:

Eth: Indian
Sex: Male
State: NJ
Grad Year: 2009
Major: Biomedical Engineering (probably w/ premed focus)
School: Very Competitive (I am submerged in a sea of Asian nerds daily...it's awful)
Courseload: Counselor has told me she will indicate "most rigorous" on app.
Grading System: (frosh/soph) A- = 90-95%; A = 95%+ :(
(junior/senior) A - = 90-92%; A = 93%+ :)
*GPA is a combo of the two scales so kinda skewed

*Frosh/Soph/Junior GPA: *

UW - 3.85; W - 4.19

Soph/Junior GPA:

UW - 3.84; W - 4.31

GPA Summary:

A mixture of A’s and A-‘s with two career B+’s (one in AP English and one in Alg II Honors (the most horrendous teacher I have ever had, end of story)). My GPA, however, is still relatively competitive in my school.

Rank:

School doesn't submit rank to colleges. Pretty sure, however, that I’m in the top 5% of ~700 students.

*All other courses = Honors (except 2 yrs of Foreign Lang, PE, and 2 yrs of computer-related electives)

Scores:

SAT: M - 800; CR - 740; W - 800; T - 2340 (1540)
SAT IIs: Chem – 800; Math II – 800; Possibly one more in October

Recs:
Counselor - Awesome: I had an interview with her and she had some flattering comments about my personality = good sign?
Teachers - One good from Eng more about personality (not the highest eng grade in class unfortunately (B+), but it is considered one of our school's toughest classes). One likely awesome rec from AP Chem teacher.
Supplemental - Prof from Rutgers who was my research mentor.

Chances For:

UPenn (ED)

JHU

Cornell

Columbia

Duke

Carnegie Mellon

UMich

New York University

Rutgers (Safety... getting full tuition/room/board :))

*Is it okay to only have 9 colleges on my list? Should I be adding some more or not? Thanks in advance for responses.

UPenn (ED): its a reach for everybody, but i think you have a really good chance, given you write good essays.

JHU: match

Cornell: high match, low reach

Columbia: reach for everybody

Duke: high match

Carnegie Mellon: match

UMich: safety

New York University: safety

i honestly think you're selling yourself short. if i had your credentials and EC's, i'd be applying to HYP.

it would be great if you could chance me back: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/577849-what-my-chances-chance-me-i-ll-chance-you.html#post1061110223

can you actually list some of those awards? i don't think scoring high on chem olympiad counts if you didn't make semis, and "qualifying for states" really doesn't mean much for science league, since it's just an in-school competition to qualify anyway. i dunno, i'm probably wrong.

anyway, your app is still really impressive (leadership, community service, research, science--what don't you have? lol), and i'd be surprised if you didn't get into penn early. good luck =)

To answer your questions insubvert:

About Chem Olympiad, yeah you're pretty much right. The reason I listed it is because only 2 people per school can qualify for the Semis which, as you can imagine, is insanely difficult out of mine. I did score pretty high though and might have made it from another school, which is why I mentioned it.

Same thing pretty much applies to the Science League from my school. Competition to take that regional test is fierce; that's why I mentioned it at all.

I hope you're both right about your chances and thanks! As for why I'm not applying to HYP, the reason is b/c I am severely underqualified compared to some of the people from my school (which really sucks, but that's life I guess).

More comments plz!

aw come on!

Wow bumped pretty low...4th Page!!!??? :(

haha:D"a sea of asian nerds..."

I feel sorry for you. truly.

JHU: high match/ low reach (They get a flock of people with the same stats as you especially since they are ranked #1 in bioengineering)

Cornell: match

Columbia: high match/low reach

Duke: match

Carnegie Mellon: match

UMich: match/safety

New York University: match/safety

Rutgers: match/safety

I think because you have so many ECs and they are all so focused on your intended major, you have a really good chance of getting in. That plus your great SAT and SATII scores I'd say that you are in for most schools.
Why don't you apply to Washington University in St Louis? They have an awesome premed program (better than most school you've listed) and they give out great financial aid (idk if that's factor for you) and you have a really good chance of getting in there with your stats.

Thanks for the chances, but you forgot my #1 choice (Penn)!!! As for WashU, I considered it but my parents don't want me so far away. They're okay with UMich only because a friend might go there and because the campus and surrounding locale is par excellence. Even Duke is a little too far for them, but I convinced them that the fact that it's rated #2 in BME makes it a great option.

Right, so more comments?

UPenn (ED)- So hard to tell, I've seen some insane things happen ED(and I mean bad things...but you have quite a shot!)

JHU-high match because BME is so competitive

Cornell-match

Columbia-slight reach (good shot)

Duke-match i'd say.

Carnegie Mellon-match

UMich-match

New York University-in

Rutgers- in for sure

agreed w/ emp

Sounds great! I hope you're right!

Okay bump again.

UPenn (ED)- Don't know...

JHU- Match-Reach

Cornell- Match

Columbia- Reach because of GPA

Duke- Match

Carnegie Mellon- Low Match

UMich - High Safety/Low Match

New York University- Low Match

Rutgers- YOU'RE ALREADY IN

Thanks! Bump.

Come on some more responses plz!

Please Respond...

Bump......

Bump it up!
