Hi everyone, I’m a rising senior so I’ll be graduating in 2017.
I’m very undecided about possible majors but I definitely want to do something in STEM, maybe medicine/healthcare but I’m not sure yet if I want to commit to pre-med. I’m looking mostly in the Northeast region and I definitely want somewhere with a strong music presence (specifically pit orchestra etc.).
Stats:
ACT - 36
SAT 2 - just took Math2 and Biology
unweighted GPA - 97.8
weighted GPA - 102.7
I’ve taken AP Calc BC, AP Physics 1, AP Biology, AP Statistics, AP Global, AP US History, AP English Language.
Senior year I’m taking AP Chem, AP Physics C, Multivariable Calc, AP Eco, AP Gov, AP English Literature.
I’ve also taken 3 years of French and Chinese.
EC:
National Honor Society - president
Tri M Honor Society - officer
World Language Honor Society
Thespian (Theater) Honor Society
Robotics - officer
Pit Orchestra
I also interned at a lab at Columbia University Medical Center last summer for research and with that project, I won some titles at local/regional science fairs. I’m interning at Mt Sinai this summer.
I’m visiting UPenn, Johns Hopkins and Georgetown next week, possibly Harvard later on in the summer.
I’m still quite lost when it comes to looking for colleges so any suggestions or tips would be amazing, thanks!
You may want to check out Tufts, Boston University, Boston College, MIT, Northeastern, etc. while you are in Boston visiting Harvard.
BC is horrible for most things stem as they don’t have any sort of engineering field. WPI and RPI aren’t too bad either, so you might want to see if you like those. The next two are kind of a stretch, but Cornell has a great all-round engineering program and JHU has an amazing pre-med track with really good resources for stem based fields! Good luck btw
When you say strong music presence, would you like to double major with a conservatory program (like Peabody at JHU) or just extracurricular?
How big a school do you want? In a city, near a city, rural? Quieter, or more work hard/play hard? What can your family afford and what does the FAFSA/net price calculators think you can afford?
Also look at URochester. If you get in you could get some good merit.
Brandeis might be another to visit in the Boston area. Lots of LACs also in Mass if you’re interested in them.
Williams seems to fit the bill if you don’t mind its rural location and small size.
@marvin100 I would say maybe not williams for STEM because of it’s lack of engineering.
You have a super strong application for any school you want. Definitely consider MIT, Harvard, JHU, UPenn, Colombia, Princeton and whatever prestigious schools you are looking at. Northeastern and Boston University are also good.
Sure, @Zer0Kelvin - I should have added “if you don’t mind waiting until grad school to specialize.”
Cost constraints?
Is engineering a possible major?
Probably want to define costs before moving forward with list. You have GREAT stats, OP. You sound like a strong candidate with many possible options. It would be good to know if you need merit aid or if finances are a consideration since with your stats you will have many possibilities.
