STEM ECs

My school doesn’t offer too many STEM ECs outside of your regular clubs (math club, physics club, that sort of stuff)—do any of you have ideas on what I can do either at school or out of school that are STEM-related? I’m also interested in journalism, computer science and filmmaking!

Suggestions for clubs, activities to join, or general advice will be very much appreciated; thanks in advance!

My school only has nine officially recognized clubs. Every other club in the school isn’t listed on the website, so it makes it harder to find clubs you’re interested in, and lots of people find out about the clubs when it’s too late. (For example, finding out about a club in 11th grade that they like, but then they can’t hold leadership positions because they just joined the club and need more experience…)

Those sound like awesome clubs! Because a lot of clubs at my school conflict with medical appointments, I am trying a club (outside of my school) for the first time! Try searching for local or regional clubs not afflicted with schools. They might have better meet up times or are more unique than those usually offered at schools!

For computer science, I just self learn it in my free time every couple of weeks. I’m not really sure if that counts as an extracurricular or not.

It might be a bit too late to start a Science Olympiad club, but I highly suggest it. If you have any questions regarding it, you can ask me. The official website is www.soinc.org and there is also a student forum for it at www.scioly.org if you want to ask the general Science Olympiad student body about anything.

I don’t know many STEM ideas, but I did a few STEM summer camps over the summer. There were a couple opportunities I saw at A&M, MIT, and UT Austin. They were pretty pricy though.

What I came here to say is that a school with limited offerings can make a good part of your college application essays. If you go out and actively reach for ECs in your future major, it’ll show you have initiative.

Science Olympiad and Science Bowl are more fun. (Hey, I just realized I can tell people I’m on a bowling team!)
You can try some International Science Olympiads. USABO’s registration deadline has passed, but there’re a bunch of others.

Depending on where you live, 4-H has some STEM clubs. Also…robotics?

It also wouldn’t hurt to join maybe your school newspaper or film club, to show that you’re interested in things other than STEM stuff and are well rounded.
