@Mastadon is right on. And hello mastodon. Happy holidays !
@MYOS1634 - Could you expand upon your comment on Providence College being an outlier in the area of research? My daughter did meet with a prof and the biology dept head at PC to discuss their program and get a tour of the facilities. Likewise, when we had toured PC earlier in the year, our tour guide gave my daughter a personalized tour of the science facilities. D was impressed by the gravitas of the program. What’s your take?
D just accepted to UCONN Storrs Campus for Molecular and Cell Biology. Portal doesn’t show merit aid - hoping for STEM honors when acceptance letter arrives via USPS.
All right. Win for the home team! Congrats @ChillDad
Just received letter confirming STEM honors designation and 20K/year scholarship - Molecular and Cell Biology. WPI and Providence are current front runners - both are showing lots of love in an effort to seal the deal (two accepted student invites came in today’s mail along with UCONN acceptance letter.)
Despite the contained nature of the UMASS and UCONN honors communites (“college within a college” concept), she likes a smaller school. She loves the opportunities for women in STEM at WPI (her college lab internship prof is an alum) and the opportunity to study abroad as part of their interdisciplinary qualifying project, but she is also drawn to PC’s vibrant campus community (her mom is an alum and her college prof mentor’s husband teaches biology at PC) and the brand new science wing/lots of research opportunities. She wants to pursue grad studies and work in the biotech field. She will be 'test driving" both campuses on a number of levels in the coming weeks. Any insights from CC members are most welcome.
The availability of both the Biology/Biotechnology majors and the Biomedical Engineering major on the WPI campus also leave open some more direct options. Many first year students also appreciate the BE option once on campus. The majority of BOTH the Bio and BME majors are women.
D Accepted at Brandeis- 15k/year Presidential Scholarship; College of Arts and Sciences - Biology
SAT 1450; Top 5 in class; 4.47 WGPA; Varsity sport captain; Science Honor Society President; College Research Lab intern
Visiting WPI again this weekend for WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) program.
Go to Brandeis over WPI for biology/biochemistry/chemistry and their fine preparation for eventual PhD. readiness. WPI is more hands on and less problem sets which she needs to master the chemistry if she wants a PhD. and a research career in biotech, I believe. " But ask WPI, where do your grads get PhDs?" I might have missed something at WPI.
Please go to the WPI 2018 placement report to view the actual graduate school placements for WPI Biology majors.
See page 12 of this PDF report for Biology majors. Pages 10 and 11 show placement for some other interesting, related majors. See https://www.wpi.edu/student-experience/career-development/outcomes
Take Coloradomama’s advice and ask them if the graduate schools listed were for PhD programs. The grad school I attended only had PhD programs in the sciences. If you passed orals and dropped out you were awarded an MS
Congrats, @ChillDad, on your daughter’s acceptances. These are wonderful options to choose from!
Wow, congratulations!
The odyssey is over - D has chosen WPI
Congratulations!
Congratulations!
Can you explain her rationale (for future readers) ?
@ChillDad Congratulations!!! We have many friends that attend and are very happy there!
